History of Milton, Ontario

• Milton is a city in the Regional Municipality of Halton, along with Oakville and Burlington. Milton was named after John Milton, an English poet who lived from 1608 to 1674. 
• Milton was incorporated as a village in 1874 and became a city in 1998. The population at the 2011 census was 43,844. 
• The Town of Milton is part of the Greater Golden Horseshoe region, including Mississauga, Brampton, Caledonia, Oakville, Burlington, Hamilton and more. 

Getting To Milton

Getting to Milton from Toronto takes about an hour and forty minutes by car. Once you arrive in Milton, you can drive or walk to most places.

Car

The easiest way to get to Milton by car from Downtown Toronto is via Highway 401. If you come from Mississauga, take the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW), which will take you directly to Milton. Reaching Milton from downtown Toronto takes about an hour and 20 minutes.

Train

If you travel to Milton by train from Toronto, you must take GO Transit. This service connects Milton with Union Station in Toronto. Trains run every 15-30 minutes during peak hours. You can find more information on the GO website.

What To Do In Milton If You Love Nature

One of the top Milton attractions and the primary draw to the area is its access to nature, hiking, and conservation areas. There are loads of options for things to do in Milton outdoors.

Rattlesnake Point Conservation Area

Located about 10 minutes from Milton, Rattlesnake Point is one of Ontario’s most beautiful conservation areas. It has five lookout spots where you can get stunning views of the Niagara Escarpment, and there are plenty of trails for hikers and nature lovers.

This is the most beautiful place for tourists to visit. The famous Bruce Trail and Crawford Lake connect the area. It offers various facilities for camping and hiking trips.

Kelso / Glen Eden Conservation Area

Kelso Conservation Area is a beautiful place to hike or bike. It is home to numerous trails and a large forest. Kelso Conservation Area is also close to the Bruce Trail.

You can go skiing during the winter season or plan a picnic during the summer months. There are many trails to walk and bike, camping spots and picnic areas, a museum, and hiking trails. There are also many places to enjoy the scenery, as this area is one of Ontario’s most majestic parts.

Hilton Falls Conservation Area

Hilton Falls Conservation Area is a beautiful place to hike or bike, but there isn’t much to do besides hiking or biking. You can swim in the river or take boat rides on the lake. There’s a viewing station where you can see the falls. You can take pictures of the falls and share those online.

The park has two trails that lead to the waterfall. One path leads to the top of the falls, less than halfway down the cliff. It takes about 30 minutes to walk to the top of the waterfall. The second trail goes all the way to the bottom of the falls. This trail is longer, so it will probably take you closer to an hour to complete this trail.

Starkey Hill Conservation Area

Starkey Hill is located northeast of Guelph and is technically part of the neighbouring Wellington County. It is about 37 hectares in size. It is hilly, but there are some flats. The trail starts at Sideroad 30 and goes to the top of the mountain, which is 4 kilometres long. The course is mostly wooded, but there is an open space. Hikers mainly visit the trail. There are many exciting things to see along this trail, such as a waterfall and a wetland.

Crawford Lake Conservation Area

Crawford Lake is a beautiful place to walk and appreciate nature, with plenty of birds and wildlife. Its unique hiking features are the lovely indigenous sculptures gracefully littered throughout the walking paths.

The other highlight is the reconstructed Iroquois village which is a great place to see how Native Americans lived in the past. You’ll be able to learn about their daily life by visiting the reconstructed longhouses. In addition, there are also interpretive programs available that explain the cultural significance of each building.

We first discovered Crawford Lake during our weekend getaway in Burlington, and quite honestly, this is one of our favourite places.

Holy Transfiguration Monastery

A short distance from Crawford Lake Conservation Area is The Transfiguration Monastery. The monastery is a Serbian Orthodox monastery in Canada and serves as the headquarters of the Eparchy of Canada. The monastery was built on 42 acres of land purchased in 1985. A park surrounds the sanctuary, with playgrounds, sports fields, and other facilities. There are also two cemeteries on the monastery grounds.

Things To Do In Milton Ontario For Kids 

Chudleigh’s Entertainment Farm

If you have ever been apple picking in Ontario, you might be familiar with Chudleigh’s Farm. Since 1967, Chudleigh’s Farm has been the place to go for good old apple-picking fun and enjoy the atmosphere.

They have many entertainment options, such as music, games, hayrides, a petting zoo, a corn maze, face painting, balloon animals, etc. 

Andrews Farm Market & Winery

Andrews Scenic Acres was established in 1980. It is a local community farm that offers pick your fruits and vegetables. There is also a winery, playground, farm animal area, and a farm store. Here you will also find the most Instagramable sunflower field.

Springridge Farm

In addition to delicious Apple Pies (which you can smell from the parking lot), Springridge Farm is ideal for picking up some juicy peaches or apples.
Springridge Farm is a quintessentially charming Ontario farm that steals people’s hearts yearly. It was established in the 1970s and is still a mainstay in the region today.

Milton, Things To Do In The Town Centre

Mill Pond

Milton was essentially built around a Mill Pond. A 2.1-kilometre lightly trafficked loop trail surrounds the pond people use to walk or jog. Depending on your pace, it takes about half an hour to complete.

The settlement of Milton was propelled toward town status by installing a gristmill powered by the nearby pond. This development provided a significant boost in the growth of the area.

Milton Historical Society Waldie Black-Smith Shop

One of the oldest attractions in Milton is The Waldie Blacksmith Shop. It is one of Ontario’s oldest blacksmith shops, built in 1865 and operating today. The building was restored in 1999 by the Milton Historical Society and volunteers. Today, it serves as an educational venue, living museum, and home to both the society and its archives.

Milton Town Hall

The Town Hall was constructed in the 1800s, making it one of the oldest buildings in Ontario that is full of history and still being used today. It has many offices, including the Mayor’s Office, Council Chambers, etc.

Since its construction, the building has undergone a few renovations, but it still maintains its original charm. It has a beautiful interior and exterior, making it a perfect spot to take photos and a great place to visit if you’re looking for some history.

The Best Restaurants In Milton

Pasqualino

Suppose you’re looking for a fine meal and excellent wine in a casual, relaxing, and informal setting; head over to Pasqualino. Their menu features the freshest locally sourced ingredients from their talented kitchen staff.

Ivy Arms

One Of The Best Bars In Milton is Ivy Arms. If you want fun and entertainment with family and friends, pull up a chair and order a pint! They’re all about customer service, so you’ll be in good hands. 

Blossom Café

If you’ve enjoyed your time at Chudleigh’s Farm (mentioned above), you’ll surely enjoy their cafe.  

Building on what they established on their farm, seeing how people from nearby cities enjoyed this taste of country life. They started Blossom Cafe to serve their delicious apple treats and as a place to reconnect with friends and family, make fresh from scratch, delectable desserts and snacks and take home a selection of irresistible desserts, jams and honey.

An excellent place for breakfast in Milton, you can pair conversation and a sweet treat with a glass of Chudleigh’s cider!

FirstOntario Arts Centre Milton

The FirstOntario Arts Centre Milton, owned and operated by the Town of Milton, is devoted to supporting art and culture as part of everyday life in the community. It hosts events, gallery exhibitions, and art programs and workshops for people of all ages and skill levels.

The Centre was made possible by a significant investment of $16.2 million from the Building Canada Fund in 2009, along with additional provincial and federal grants totalling $39.3 million.

Milton Farmer’s Market

The Milton Farmers’ Market has served their local community since the 1970s with freshly-picked produce from local farmers and an array of handmade wares from artisans and flower vendors –– over 30 vendors.

Orange Snail Brewers

Orange Snail makes delicious craft beers, from American pale ale and an English cream ale to Indian pale ale. Their beers are brewed traditionally and served in a warm, inviting, and cozy atmosphere.

Things To Do In Milton This Weekend

Stonehouse of Campbellville

The Stonehouse of Campbellville is where people see beautiful stained glass windows. The shop specializes in windows and sells other antiques like furniture and artwork.

Woodbine Mohawk Park

Woodbine Mohawk Park is a horse racing track built in 1909 and has been home to many great horses, such as Seabiscuit, Secretariat, and Affirmed. The track also hosts annual events like the Canadian International Stakes every year during the summer months.

The City of Milton owns the track, but it is operated by the Woodbine Entertainment Group (WEG). WEG is an entertainment company that owns several other racetracks around North America, including Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, New York’s Aqueduct Racetrack, and Belmont Park in New York.

Terre Bleu Lavender Farm

Terre Blue Lavender Farms sells lavender, sunflowers, and other plants. They were founded in 2018, and they’ve become an integral part of the community. If you want to buy lavender, go to Lochland Botanicals. They sell lavender, sunflower, and other plants. You can also pick your flowers and herbs at Terre Blue Lavender farms.

 Halton County Radial Railway Museum

The Halton County Radial Railroad is at 13629 Guelph Line in Milton, Ontario. It is an operating electric railway and museum. The HCRR features historic electric railcars operating over 2 km of scenic track.
After the donation of the TTC Streetcar 1326, the dream grew, and the museum opened its doors in 1972. Since then, the vision of the Halton County Radiall Railroad has been to inform, educate and inspire the public about the electric railway’s history of Ontario and Canada.

A History of Oakville

• Oakville, Ontario’s history dates back to 1830 when Colonel William K. Chisholm founded it. 

• The town became an extension of the Underground Railroad, which led escaped African slaves out of America and into Canadian towns. There were also several slaves smuggled out of America and into Oakville by the famous Captain Robert Wilson.

• Certain African American families, after escaping slavery, settled in Oakville and opened up businesses. These people opened up barbers, fruit farms, and other companies. And when the town was incorporated in 1857, it was ready to become the thriving industrial community known today—rated as one of the top five places to live in Canada.

Getting To Oakville From Toronto

Oakville is a 30-minute drive from Toronto, and the town is a short distance from several airports. Here are the best ways to get to Oakville. 

By Car

A road trip from Toronto to Oakville offers a quick and direct route, taking less than an hour. This is the cheapest way to get to Oakville.

By Bus

There is a ±30-minute bus ride directly from Renforth Dr in Toronto to Trafalgar Rd. @ Hwy. 407 Park & Ride in Oakville. This only gets you to the bus stop, and then you’ll need to find your way to your accommodation. 

By Train

Trains from Toronto to Oakville leave multiple times a day. Direct train routes between the two take 22 minutes to get you to Oakville from Toronto. Train tickets are pretty affordable, ranging from 20 CAD to 25 CAD. 

What To Do in Oakville, Ontario: Weekend Itinerary

Here’s a basic layout of the perfect weekend itinerary and all the best Oakville attractions:

• Arrive in the afternoon – Afternoon hike in Bronte Creek Provincial Park, and then dinner at Chop Steakhouse & Bar.
• Day 1 – Bronte Village, then Kerr Village.
• Day 2 – Downtown Oakville.

Bronte Creek Provincial Park

Start your time in Oakville with an afternoon hike. Pick any of the trails below and enjoy a comfortable and stunning walk. These are all located in the Day Use area of the park.

• Maiden’s Blush Trail – a 1-kilometre, wheelchair-accessible paved trail through the forest. 

• Trillium Trail – also wheelchair accessible and stroller-friendly, this 1-kilometre trail offers gorgeous views of the valley floor and spring wildflowers in bloom.
• Ravine Trail – a bit longer, this 2.7-kilometre trail winds around the valley’s top. You’ll walk between Spruce Lane Farm and Lot A’s picnic area.

Chop Steakhouse & Bar

Chop Steakhouse’s menu is stacked with 100% premium Canadian beef steaks, as well as fresh seafood and other hearty meals. The drinks are varied, with specialty coffees, daily featured cocktails, and plenty of ciders and beers on offer. But the must-have here is the proprietary beer, Big Life Amber Ale, made by Creemore.

Day 1 – Oakville Attractions: Discover Bronte Village

Bronte Village began as a small fishing village in 1834, built on the spot where the Twelve Mile Creek met Lake Ontario. The harbour was established in 1894, making it one of the oldest lakeside communities in Ontario. 

This small village also served as an entry point for many African Americans entering Canada through the Underground Railroad system. Some of these individuals chose to build their homes right here, on the shores of the lake. 

Black History Bike Tour

There are many locations and landmarks that remain from when the African Americans landed in Bronte Village. One of the best ways to see these Oakville points of interest is to hop on a bike (if you haven’t bought your own, rent one) and take this self-guided tour. 

Bronte Heritage Waterfront Park

This waterfront park is popular with locals and visitors alike. There is space to take a stroll, chat and sip on a good cup of Oakville coffee (Taste of Columbia is super). There is a playground for the kids and big grassy patches for the canines. 

Muskoka Chair Display

What began in 2017 as a fun community project has become quite popular around town. Bronte BIA’s “At Home in Bronte” initiative (Business Improvement Area) sees organizations and groups of locals come together and paint lounge chairs in specific themes.

If you walk along the Lakeshore, you’ll notice these brightly-coloured chairs. Take a seat for a moment and soak in the views and atmosphere that Bronte Village provides.

• EcoFillosophy specializes in eco-friendly products, reusables over disposables, and even has a refill program. 
• Goldwyn & Sons – for a real treat and some essential grooming, Goldwyn & Sons does haircuts, beard trims, and other upscale treatments paired with a drink.

Bronte Village Specialty Foods

Take your tastebuds on a journey at any (or all) of these spots:

• Flavour Fox – a range of flavours, as well as hot drinks and even fro-yo for the dogs.
• Taste of Colombia – find Fair Trade coffee, gifts, savoury and sweet foods, and even coffee cocktails here. 

La Parisienne Crêperie (Temporarly Closed)

La Parisienne Crêperie is a husband-and-wife-run Parisian-style cafe that provids sweet & savoury French-style crêpes. The way the inside is decorated 

La Parisienne Creperie is a little piece of France in Bronte Harbour. Owned by husband-and-wife team Mikael and Courtney Colas, who took over their family business and breathed new energy into the space! The completely renovated interior of the restaurant will instantly take you back to a cute cafe in Paris.

Meanwhile, the delicious sweet & savoury French-style crêpes are delicious and made with fresh, local ingredients whenever possible to support the local farmers and winemakers. 

This place is on its way to no longer being a hidden gem!

Coronation Park

This park is right on the shores of Lake Ontario and offers plenty of grassy space, volleyball nets, and picnic tables. You can even see the Toronto skyline on a clear day as you look out over Lake Ontario. 

Kerr Village

Today, Kerr Village is a quaint little community comprising boutique shops, hospitable restaurants, and a strong feeling of community. But back in the 1850s, the village was a haven for African Americans fleeing America who built their homes here. 

Self-Guided Black History Tour

An insightful self-guided tour is available to anyone wanting to explore the buildings and places of interest surrounding Kerr Village’s Black History significance. 

Just a few things to take note of from the tour include:

• Burnet Park – In 2019, a plaque commemorated the 40,000+ African American people who migrated to Canada through the Underground Railroad.

• The Adams Home – initially owned by Jeremiah B Adams, was kept in the Adams family for 100+ years. It was demolished in 2016, but you can visit where it stood. 

• Shipyard Park is fast becoming public and a permanent dedication to Oakville’s Black history as its one of the places along Lake Ontario where American slaves first arrived.

• Turner Chapel Antiques and Appraisers – once the Turner African Methodist Episcopal Church, built in 1891 by former slaves. 

• Kerr Street – the original home of the much-loved Carousel of Nations Multicultural Festival, Kerr St. is the heart of this village and holds much of its history.

Tannery Park

Tannery Park offers views of Lake Ontario, public washrooms, and plenty of space for the whole family to relax. On a clear day, you can also see Toronto’s skyline from here.

Some points of interest inside the park:

• Oakville Lighthouse – you can’t go in the actual lighthouse, but the scene from the outside is worth the stop. 
• Waterfront Trail – spanning through Tannery park, you can stroll down this trail and enjoy the fresh air and lakeside views.

Kerr Village Shopping

• Dove + Arrow – stop here to purchase locally-made products as souvenirs and gifts. 
• The Kind Matter Company is another fantastic Oakville eco-friendly shop for zero-waste shopping. 

Kerr Village Specialty Foods

Some of these spots are a part of the Taste of Oakville festival, and others are just worth a visit. 

• Farmhouse Artisan Cheese is a great place to pick up gourmet cheese for a picnic and a few locally-made products. 
• The Sweetest Thing is a boutique bakery with delicious cakes, cookies, and coffee. 
• Vereda Central Coffee Roasters is undoubtedly home to the best coffee in Kerr Village. 
• Café Mix Up – a Black-owned mother-and-son operation serving everything from soup and salad to pasta and desserts.
• Community Restaurant – serving delicious meals with a 100% plant-based menu.

Jac’s Bistro

Jac’s Bistro is a trendy French/Italian restaurant on Kerr Street. It has been voted one of the best restaurants in the GTA by Toronto Life Magazine and Chatelaine Magazine.

The menu features classic dishes from France and Italy, emphasizing fresh ingredients and local products. Jac’s Bistrot offers a wide variety of wines by the glass or bottle as well as specialty cocktails.

Film.Ca Cinemas

Independently owned and operated by an Oakville local, this cinema has five screens to show new movies and classic favourites. Their unique aspect, though, is the magnificent snack bar available. 

Day 2 – Head to Downtown Oakville

The heart of Downtown Oakville is a bustling neighbourhood filled with interesting shops, local businesses, and upscale eateries. This is a spectacular part of town with Six Mile Creek running right through Downtown Oakville and Lake Ontario showing off its beauty from the harbour. 

This is where the town’s founder, Colonel William Chisholm, settled in and built his home. And later, it’s where the African-American people would come to develop their businesses and new lives. 

Sixteen Mile Creek

Start the morning at 16 Mile Creek. The main loop trail runs for about 6 kilometres, crossing the creek on both sides, and there are several side trails. There are some sections where there are hills, but the paths aren’t too busy. The trails have fantastic lookout points, where you might see wild animals.

The Moccasin trail is part of Ontario‘s heritage trails, encouraging hikers to explore the landscape from a First Nation perspective. A series of 13 Indigenous plaques tell Indigenous stories and offer a deeper understanding of Indigenous cultures.

If you visit during or after a fresh fall of snow, it’s nothing short of breathtaking.

The Simple Kitchen is perfect for breakfast, with delicious but healthy options to start the day. It offers a wide range of low-carb, paleo and gluten-free products, including healthy whole foods for takeaways, granolas, beverages, and natural body care products.

• Burrows Clothiers – if you’re looking for some upscale clothing for men to wear for your evening plans, stop in at Burrows, and they’ll sort you out.
• Village Cigar Company & Barbershop – cigars, sophistication, and gent’s haircuts. We visited the sister company in Burlington and can say you won’t be sorry you stopped in. 
• Maker’s Mojo – a marketplace for uniquely handmade products, perfect for gift shopping. 

Nyla’s Room

You must have lunch at this Black-owned tea room and delight in oven-baked goodness, award-winning gelato, and some comfort food.

Nyla’s Room embraces each customer with its unique Jamaican style. It celebrates some of the world’s best-loved comfort foods from Jamaica’s North Coast. Hospitality. We wouldn’t be surprised if you found it difficult to leave as the staff are incredible, fun and warmly welcoming.

Oakville Towne Square

This is the heart of Downtown, and you’ll find numerous shops and businesses within the square. 

George’s Square

This leafy square is home to the Veteran’s Wall memorials that Oakville put up to remember and honour their war veterans. 

Historic Homes and Churches on Alan and Navy Streets

Alan and Navy Streets are both home to several historic homes and churches. A stroll down each of these streets allows you to view these buildings and perhaps learn even more about this town’s history.

Oakville Museum

When Colonel William Chisholm founded Oakville, he built Erchless Estate in a prime spot – overlooking the harbour and Lake Ontario. This family home is now the Oakville Community Museum. 

The museum displays Oakville’s rich and captivating history with various exhibits. Two of these are centred around Oakville’s Black history. One exhibit shows the story of a freeborn African-American, Branson Johnson and his life in Oakville. And another is a multi-media presentation of a former slave, Debra Brown’s journey in the Underground Railroad. 

Lakeside Park

Lakeside Park is home to Oakville’s first post office and an 1829 residence (The Thomas House). It’s also where you will find the TOWARF Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary. The park has public restrooms, benches, and endless grassy areas to sit and enjoy the space. 

Dingle Park

Another splendid open space in Oakville, Dingle Park, offers walking paths, picnic benches, and impressive views of Lake Ontario and the Toronto skyline. It’s small but often also peaceful, so it’s a great place just to gather your thoughts and appreciate the scenes around you. 

Oakville Galleries

This space is a not-for-profit contemporary art museum housed in the public library. It is designed to bring communities together in unconventional and unexpected ways. 

One of the must-see exhibits is the Two Truths and a Lie exhibit. It’s a collaborative artistic expression from several artists. This speaks to the “complex interactions within the pursuit of truth.”

The Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts

This centre puts on multiple performances each year, a fantastic place for the Oakville community to unite in dance, music, and storytelling. You can find a schedule and book tickets on their website. 

CAMERON’S Brewing Company

The perfect way to end your Oakville visit, enjoy an ice-cold beer from this award-winning, family-run brewery. There are occasional events here, too, with live music and catered food to accompany what many people say is “the best beer in Canada.”

Glen Abbey Golf Club

The world-famous Glen Abbey Golf Club has been the site of 25 Canadian Open Championships –– most notably when Tiger Woods defeated Grant Waite in 2000. Whether you’re a pro golf enthusiast or just looking for a relaxing brunch spot, the Glen Abbey Golf Club is a great choice. The club is also home to a golf academy for those wishing to learn the art of the sport.

Also located at Glen Abbey Golf Club is the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame, where visitors can learn about the rich golf history in Canada. Notable inductees include Stephen Ames, Michael Weir, Sandra Post, Stanley Thompson, and the legendary Jack Nicklaus.

History of Burlington, Ontario

Burlington City is located at the head of Lake Ontario, 50 km west of Toronto. The town first served as a beach resort and a fruit-growing center until it later developed from the northeast of Toronto in 1950. 

Today, Burlington has become a lakefront residential city and is world-renowned for the Royal Botanical Gardens.

Burlington is next to major highways connecting to the Greater Toronto Area, Kitchener/Waterloo, and the Niagara Region. 

It’s easily accessible by road via the ON-403 highway, and there are plenty of public transportation options, like the VIA Rail and Go transit public transportation services to Burlington. There are also plenty of taxi companies, cycling lanes, and Burlington Transit services within the city too. 

Moreover, it’s within 45 minutes of major international airports: Hamilton, Kitchener/Waterloo, Buffalo, and Toronto Pearson.

2. Royal Botanical Gardens

A 3-minute drive from the Scholtens Inc outlet lies the beautiful, must-see gardens. The Royal Botanical Gardens is not just any garden; it’s Canada’s largest garden and arguably one of the top Burlington attractions. 

The exquisite landscapes are divided into sections and spread across 900 hectares of land. It features four outdoor gardens, three restaurants, a gift shop, and one greenhouse. Stroll around the picturesque gardens and discover the world’s largest lilac collection and over 1,000 plant and flower species.

3. Pepperwood Bistro

Once it’s time for dinner, there’s no better place for a delectable meal than the Pepperwood Bistro. It’s a local hot spot in Burlington, serving contemporary bistro fare and their own on-premise brewed beers served by the pint.

Now that you’ve stocked up on snacks, stroll around the stunning gardens; it’s time to find your accommodation for the night. 5. Art Gallery of Burlington

Located in the heart of the city near Spencer Smith Park and a 3-minute drive from Sunshine Doughnuts is the award-winning Art Gallery of Burlington – the seventh-largest public exhibit in Ontario. The gallery has over 1,000 pieces of art in a 4,100-square-meter space. 

One of the biggest attractions is its collection of contemporary Canadian ceramics, the largest in Canada. It also boasts a lovely courtyard that hosts around 20 exhibitions annually.

6. Kelly’s Bake Shoppe

Kelly’s Bake Shoppe is a must-visit if you have a sweet tooth and want to try vegan baked goods when visiting Burlington, Ontario. 

Located in downtown Burlington near City Hall, the bakery is home to some of the most decadent, delicious vegan cupcakes. Sample some mouth-watering giant cookie sandwiches, award-winning Mile-High Brownies, and Nanaimo bars.

7. Village Square

And while you’re in downtown Burlington, only a 4-minute walk from the bakery, catch a hint of European charm in Village Square. It’s home to lively farmer’s markets in the summertime and the North Coal Christmas market in wintertime.

10. The Odd Spot 

While you’re in the area, take a stroll around The Odd Spot. As the name suggests, you’ll come to a place filled with fun, odd, and exciting things, from Star Trek TV props to a 1970s SuperCycle Vintage bike and recycled clothing.

11. Nickel Brook Brewing

If you enjoy an ice-cold beer draft now and then, go to Nickel Brook Brewing Co and sample some of the best craft beer in Ontario. It’s a microbrewery located a short ride from downtown Burlington and a mere 6-minute drive from the Joseph Brant Museum.

The brewery serves various beers, including stouts, ales, IPAs, and sour beers – all crafted onsite in their ‘Funk Lab.’ Moreover, you can purchase other items such as apparel, glassware, accessories, and tasting kits to take home with you.

12. The Burlington Performing Arts Centre

From large-scale theatrical productions to one-person shows, the Burlington Performing Arts Centre (BPAC) is the city’s music and theatre arts hub. Located near the waterfront, the centre features an array of entertainment options. 

The 720-seat main stage has had performers from all over the world, while the 165-seat Community Studio Theatre has hosted several productions that have enthralled thousands of viewers. If you’re looking for a state-of-the-art entertainment evening, treat yourself to an incredible performance at BPAC.

13. Spencer Smith Park

Speaking of strolling, why not take a 6-minute walk to Spencer Smith Park? Home to Ribfest and the Burlington Beer Festival (need we say more), it is the perfect spot for visitors looking to spend a little time outdoors as it offers green space, a playground, fountains, sculptures and more! For those looking for something more active, the paved Burlington waterfront trail is ideal for runners, cyclists, and rollerblades.

The exquisite parkland boasts several pathways, a wide promenade that hugs the lake, and benches dotted throughout. Find a spot on the expansive green lawns to relax and picnic, or take a stroll and enjoy the peaceful scenery. And if you’re taking the family on a road trip, the park also has a children’s playground and water jet area.

In addition, to Ribfest and the Burlington Beer Festival, in the spring, it’s one of the premier places in Ontario to observe cherry blossoms. During the summer, it’s about the super popular Sound Of Music festival (more details below). In the winter, the Rotary Centennial Pond is transformed into a public skating rink, and the Lakeside Festival of Lights display offers a breathtaking view of various Christmas lights.

14. Brant Street Pier

The Brant Street Pier is a 2-minute drive from The Odd Spot. Located on the shoreline, an S-shaped pier stretches 137 meters over Lake Ontario. 

Walking along the pier and up the circular staircase to the elevated deck to discover exquisite views. There you’ll get to soak in the panoramic views of the lake and the Burlington shoreline. 

Note: The pier is open between 7 am and 11 pm, so you can enjoy the area in the morning, noon, or night.

15. Joseph Brant Museum

Along the lakefront, 3 minutes from the park, you’ll come to find the Joseph Brant Museum. Stroll around the place and learn about Burlington’s founding, settlement, and development. The museum also features three galleries and hosts many travelling exhibitions.

Note: It opens from 10 am to 4 pm, Tuesdays to Saturdays.

16. Spencer’s at the Waterfront

Once you’ve worked up an appetite and to end off an exciting day of activities in Burlington, head for dinner at the waterfront. You’ll find Spencer’s on the Waterfront Restaurant at the west end of Spencer Smith Park. 

You’ll get to savour freshly grown produce from their farm and sustainably sourced seafood. It’s the perfect place to end a beautiful day, enjoying delectable food with a spectacular view.

A Footnote on Fun Activities Burlington for a Day

The Sound of Music

One of the many reasons Burlington is one of Canada’s most beloved cities is the abundance of cultural events and festivals. And one of Canada’s largest annual music festivals, the Sound of Music Festival, is not one to miss. 

It’s been held every June since the 1980s and showcases many local artists and performers celebrating Father’s Day weekend in Spencer Park.

One thing is for sure – the city of Burlington manages to captivate its visitors year-round. 

Whether you want to enjoy a pleasant stroll along the waterfront promenade, sample some delectable vegan cookies, or visit Canada’s largest botanical gardens, Burlington has you covered.

Burlington Beach

When the weather gets too hot, and the air is too humid, Burlington Beach is a great place to cool off or sun tan. Also known as The Beachway, it covers 6.8 acres of park space and has two kilometres of paved walking trails connected to Spencer Smith Park. In addition, Burlington Beach has one of the biggest baymouth bars in Ontario, the only dune habitat in Halton and home to rare plants such as seaside spurge and sand dropseed.

It’s especially popular on weekends, and between 8:00 am and 8:00 pm on Saturdays and Sundays, parking fees are in effect at $2.50 per hour or a flat rate of $20.

Mount Nemo Conservation Area

If you’re looking for tranquillity, the Mount Nemo Conservation Area is just outside of Burlington. Located 15 minutes from Burlington’s downtown, the park showcases 5 kilometres of trails with impressive views, looking as far as Toronto (on a clear day).

Nature lovers flock to Mount Nemo for its remarkable escarpment-edge ecosystem and astounding biodiversity. Everything from observing turkey vultures in flight and unique plants to interesting insect and animal species.

Places To Visit Near Burlington

As we mentioned, Burlington has so many things on offer that it can be a weekend getaway in its own right, especially when combined with other cities within the Halton Region.

Crawford Lake Conservation – Out in the Milton area, you can explore the history of Indigenous peoples at Crawford Lake Conservation Area, home to 11 Longhouses. Spend time understanding their traditions, art, and culture.

Bronte Creek Provincial Park – North of Oakville, near the border of Oakville and Burlington, is Bronte Creek, which offers a wide range of activities everyone can enjoy, from hiking and biking to playing disc golf and swimming in its large outdoor water park.

Ireland House Museum – The Ireland House Museum is a fantastic way to combine history with fun activities. Here, you’ll find original artifacts from the original settlers of the area, which were donated by the descendants of the Ireland family.

The town of Oakville is located in the beautiful natural surrounding of Halton Region and is a whopping 30-minute (30 Kilometre) drive from downtown Toronto. Full disclosure: The 30-minute drive time is largely dependent on there being no other cars on the highway –– which is rare. Sorry.

Anyway, although it’s been ranked as one of the top 5 places to live in Canada, it is often overlooked as a day trip destination.

It has much to offer, including a vibrant arts scene and natural scenery waiting to be discovered, great shopping, dining, entertainment, festivals, history and more! With its small-town feeling, it’s easy to walk around for hours without getting bored.

History Of Oakville | What’s Oakville known for?

• The Chisholms of Erchless Estate – On August 1st, 1827, William Chis­holm bought 960 acres of land from Queen Victoria at the mouth of Sixtee­n­Mile Creek and planned out the town of Oakville and Oakville Harbour.
• By 1834, the town of Oakville had become an official port of entry into Canada and an extension to the Underground Railroad. Ships from Oakville often sailed through the Great Lakes and beyond. Ship captains assisted many slaves by hiding them in grain vessels.
• Oakville also has some of Ontario’s best golf courses, including the famous Glen Abbey Golf Club.

Getting To Oakville From Toronto

Car

The easiest way to get to Oakville is by driving directly there. You can choose from several options, depending on your location. For example, if you come from Toronto, take Highway 401 North towards Hamilton and exit at Exit 22 (Halton Hills). This will bring you into the Town of Halton Hills, next to Oakville.

If you want to avoid traffic, we recommend taking the 407 Westbound towards Burlington and exiting at Exit 23 (Burlington) and then continuing onto Highway 404 East towards Oakville.

If you’re coming from Downtown Toronto, take the Gardiner Expressway Westbound towards Highway 427 South and exit at Exit 21 (Dundas Street). Then continue onto Highway 403 East to reach Oakville.

Bus

You can also take public transportation to get to Oakville. The closest bus stop to the town centre is Dundas St W & Main St. You can catch the GO Transit buses between Union Station and Oakville. They leave every 15 minutes. By Train

Places To Visit In Oakville

Go For A Hike

Halton Region is known for its green spaces, and Oakville is no different. With over 1,400 hectares of parkland and 200km of trails, nature is one of the top Oakville attractions.

Bronte Creek

Bronte Creek Provincial Park is located right at the western edge of town. The hiking trails are great for walking or cycling, or bring your fishing rod, relax and go fishing. Swimming in the park’s outdoor pool is fun, and camping is available in the park, as well as a historic house, nature center and children’s farm.

Sixteen Mile Creek

The main loop trail is a little over 6 km long, and the path crosses the creek on both sides. Some sections have hills, but the paths are relatively flat and not too busy. There are plenty of lookouts, you might see some wildlife, and the woods are gorgeous.

The Moccasin Trail is part of Ontario’s heritage trails which encourage hikers to explore the land from a First Nations perspective. A series of 13 Indigenous plaques share Indigenous tales and offer a deeper understanding of Indigenous cultures. 

Visiting during or after a fresh snowfall is nothing stunning.

Glen Abbey Golf Club

The Jack Nicklaus Golf Course, designed by the legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus, is one of the most popular courses in the whole country! Glen Abbey Golf Club has hosted 25 Canada Open Championships to date. As a matter of fact, in 2000, Tiger Woods beat Grant Waite at Augusta National Golf Club.

If you’re a hardcore golf fanatic, also located on the Glen Abby Golf Club property is the Canadian Golf Hall Of Fame, where you can learn about the history of golf in Canada. Besides a museum that displays historic materials and keeps records, the Canadian Golf Association Hall of Fame has inducted people who have been players, coaches, and course architects.

Some inductees in the hall of fame include Stephen Michael Ames, Michael Richards Weir, Sandra Post, Stanley Thompson and Jack William Nicklas.

Downtown Oakville Things To Do! Shop & Dine

Known as Downtown Oakville, old Oakville sits along Lake Ontario in South-Central Oakville. It’s a lively neighbourhood that’s worth exploring.

Old Oakville has an old-town feel, complete wit­h trendy restaurants, great bars, art galleries and specialty shops, and several high-end boutiques.

Oakville Museum (Erchless Estate) 

For history buffs, one of the best Oakville attractions is the Oakville Museum and Archives, the former home of the Chisholms members who founded the town. The estate has been converted into a historical site and museum.

Not only is the museum’s architecture, grounds, and garden magnificent, but inside the museum, you’ll find an impressive collection of costumes, textiles, ethnological artifacts and decor that belonged to the family’s members.

The Black History permanent exhibit at Oakville’s Museum of Oakville tells the stories of many of our African-American families who came to Oakville and were important contributors to the development of our town.

On display is Bransons Johnson’s certificate of freedom from a Maryland court and his pocket watch in which it had it hidden in for many years.

Kelso Conservation Area for the beach!

Oakville has several beaches, including one right next to the town centre. However, the Kelsey Conservation Area beach is worth driving to nearby Milton.

During the summer, Lake Kelso offers a beautiful beach with a walkway, boat rentals, and food concessions. Rent a canoe, a kayak, or a paddleboat to go out on the water or relax on the beach and get some sun. 

Bronte Creek

As mentioned at the top, swimming in the Bronte Creek Provincial Park’s massive outdoor pool is fun, and camping is available, as well as a historic house, nature center and children’s farm.

Royal Botanical Gardens

The Royal Botanical Garden is unlike any other garden you’ve ever visited, with over 11 square kilometres of gardens divided into five distinct areas making it a wonderful place to wander around. There are indoor and outdoor displays, wedding venues and a cute little cafe with a patio to relax and smell the roses.

Things To Do Near Oakville, Head To The Racetrack

One of the fun things to do near Oakville, not far away from Campbellville, is Mohawk Racetrack. It’s a harness racing track with an eight-and-a-half-mile circumference track. Mohawk Racetracks has hosted several races, including the North America cup, the Canadian trotting classic and the Breeders crown.

History of Burlington, Ontario

Burlington city is a regional municipality of Halton in southeastern Ontario. It began as a village in 1873, encompassing earlier settlements of Port Nelson and Wellington Square. In 1914, it became a town, and in 1958, Nelson township and the Aldershot area were incorporated to form Burlington. 

Later, Burlington became a city in 1974. And today, the city is home to the world-renowned Royal Botanical Gardens and is a popular lakeside residential metropolitan.

The North Coal 

North Coal is a mere hop, skip, and a jump away from the cigar and barbershop and is the perfect place to enjoy some delicious cuisine. Browse through their menu options, from dockside charcuterie to smoked maple short ribs and everything in between. Apart from the incredible dining experience, you’ll come to find some cool apparel in their store.

The Odd Spot 

The Odd Spot is a few blocks away from The North Coal, near the lakefront and other attractions. Here you’ll find some interesting, quirky, and odd things such as records, antiques, and unique trinkets.

Nickel Brook Brewing

Head to Nickel Brook Brewing Co. and sample some craft beers brewed in their Funk Lab and uncover new heights of flavour.

They also boast a large-scale barreling program for ageing beer in over 400 whisky, gin, tequila, and wine barrels. It’s also a great place to buy their apparel, glassware, beer, and tasting kits (great for gifts too).

Spencer Smith Park

Take a lazy stroll through Spencer Smith Park and be spoiled with sweeping views of the lake, beach, and Skyway bridge. 

It’s a great place to relax and enjoy a picnic if you have time. And if you’re bringing kids along, there’s a playground for them to burn energy. The park holds an array of Burlington’s signature festivals and events including one of Canada’s largest music festivals the Sound of Music.

The Sound Of Music Festival

As mentioned above, the Sound of Music Festival is one of Canada’s largest music festivals with approximately a hundred thousand attendees over a 10 day period. It’s a definite must-see if you’re visiting and love free outdoor concerts. 

The musical smorgasbord has been held every June since the 1980s, boasting incredible performances and music. Dance to a mix of tunes, from EDM, rock, and hip hop to classical, reggae, and more.

Springridge Farm

I sure hope you didn’t wolf down too many delights from our bee friends, as there’s another incredible place to sample and browse around. 

Drive to Springridge Farm, where you’ll find a quaint Barn Market, Loft Boutique, and Bakery. It’s another great spot to enjoy varieties of honey, oodles of produce, and freshly baked goods.

The Burlington Performing Arts Centre 

The Burlington Performing Arts Centre (BPAC) is the city’s artsy hub that features a range of entertainment options, from large-scale theatrical performances to single-person shows.  

Burton Cummings, Buffy Sainte-Marie, and many famous performers have graced the 720 seaters Main stage, while the 165-seater Community Studio Theater has enthralled thousands for entertainment.

The farm was meant to be a pick-your-own berry farm but has become so much more. Over the years, Lauraine and Bert Andrews have worked hard to create a welcoming working farm environment for visitors from all over to enjoy. 

Today, visitors will find a tasting room and retail shop on-site. Guests can also enjoy a guided tour of the vineyard, gardens, apple orchard, and cidery. The Andrews family has created a tranquil and picturesque spot for visitors of all ages.

History | About The Andrews’ Farm

In 1980, Lauraine and Bert Andrews purchased a farm in Halton Hills, Milton. The land was large – spanning 165 acres – but it was run down and needed some love and attention. Initially, the farm was envisioned as a pick-your-own berry farm. 

Then, in 1999 the farm began producing their very own fruit wines using the berries and grapes grown on the farm. These were sold under the separate name of Scotch Block Winery.

Getting There From Toronto

Andrews’ Scenic Acres is located in Milton, Ontario, just outside of Oshawa, about an hour from Toronto. You can take a bus or train to visit for the day or make it part of your road trip through Ontario. 

By Car

From Toronto, take Highway 401 travelling east, and get off at the exit for Highway 35. From there, take Highway 12 south towards Bowmanville until you reach County Road 28, just north of Milton. 

Turn left on County Road 28 and head east to Countryside Drive East, where you will turn right onto Andrews’ Scenic Acres Farm Lane.

By Train or Bus

You can take either the GO Transit train, using the Milton Line, or the GO Bus. These both depart from downtown Toronto and will deliver you straight to Milton’s downtown streets. It’s then just a 12-minute drive to the farm itself.

Andrews Scenic Acres: Important Visitor Information

The farm is open every day from 10 am. During the week, it closes at 4 pm and over the weekend, closing time is moved to 5 pm. 

There is an entrance fee, which is cheaper during the week than over weekends. This cost includes access to the farm store and the winery. Fruit picking comes at a separate cost. 

The farm has a picking schedule, so you can see when you’ll be able to pick your favourite berries. 

What To Do at Andrews’ Scenic Farm

There is plenty to keep everyone entertained at the Andrews’ family farm. It’s best to plan for between 2 and 3 hours to visit and enjoy it all. 

Enjoy the Scenic Landscape

This farm got its name from its fantastic location and the magical scenery surrounding it. Not to mention the beauty that has been incorporated into the farm. There are wildflower meadows, large fields of sunflowers, and the gorgeous Niagara Escarpment to appreciate. 

Note: Photographers do need to pay for photography permits and arrange for time slots with management.

Visit the Winery and Shop at the Farm Store

The farm store is the ideal place to stop in and buy a fresh pie and other delectable fresh foods. 

There are also farmers’ markets that happen at the farm, although there won’t be any of these happening in 2021. 

Bring the Kids for Fun and Laughs

Kids will love the farm for more than just its open spaces and fresh air. Little ones can enjoy the following:

• Miniature straw maze
• Corn walk
• Corn Maze

Admire the Sunflowers Field

You can visit the flower fields on the farm, enjoy the stunning views, and even pick your own flowers to take home. This is, of course, seasonal. So, if flowers are the biggest reason for your visit, it’s best to plan your trip during spring or summer for wild dahlias and peonies or fall for sunflowers. 

Pick Your Own Fruit & Veg

This is one of the best reasons to visit Andrews’ Scenic Farm in Milton. Many come here from all over Ontario to harvest their own berries and vegetables. 

This is another seasonal event, with fruits like strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and currants available in spring and summer. Fall sees pumpkins, squash, and apples become available to pick and take home. 

Enjoy Tours & Parties

The farm offers educational guided tours between May and October. These are ideal for school groups of all ages and even summer camps.

Birthday parties can also be arranged, with plenty of space for kids to run and play and for parents to sit back and enjoy the day.
