Visit the Applewood Farm & Winery, Scugog

The Applewood Farm and Winery has produced wines and ciders for over 20 years in Scugog. It’s also a great place to escape to the countryside, explore the farm, and enjoy seasonal pickings, such as apple picking.

For those looking for fall-themed Durham attractions, we highly recommend visiting the farm during fall in mid-September. Here you can pick your very own pumpkin in the pumpkin patch and create a cute or spooky Jack-O-Lantern. There’s also a small animal barn, wagon rides, and playhouses for your little ones. Challenge Yourself at Treetop Eco-Adventure Park, Oshawa

Walk or Ride on the Waterfront Trail, Oshawa

If you’re an avid walker or cyclist, grab your water bottles and hit the Waterfront Trail. The trail stretches from Niagara-on-the-Lake to Brockville and passes through Oshawa, hugging the edges of Lake Ontario and taking you off-road past the city.

You’ll find a few car parks, washrooms, and two lookout points along the way.

This part of the trail falls on one of the most significant wetlands in the area, the Second Marsh. The largest remaining coastal wetland between Niagara and Presqu’ile, the marsh offers many opportunities to see local wildlife and the area’s beautiful plants from the viewing decks. The wetland is particularly important for the large number of migratory and breeding birds who use it as a stopover.

Trek Through the McLaughlin Bay Wildlife Reserve, Oshawa

The McLaughlin Bay Wildlife Reserve boasts 4.3 miles (7 km) of walking and cycling trails. There are 11 offbeat treks to choose from, and along the way, you’ll find paths of all sorts, including those with gravel, wood, and grass-mowed surfaces. There are three entry points into the reserve. You’ll also find viewpoints and picnic areas to relax and enjoy during your visit. It’s the perfect space for families, friends, solo travellers, and nature enthusiasts.

Discover Darlington Provincial Park, Oshawa

Located east of Oshawa, on Lake Ontario, Darlington Provincial Park is a small park that attracts visitors from far and wide. Gentle hills and beautiful panoramic views dominate the park. It’s teeming with wildlife, including white-tailed deer, grey wolves, coyotes, and beautiful monarch butterflies. In fact, there are so many butterflies in the park that it’s part of a conservation program. 

For those who are interested in spending more time here, the park offers three campground areas with a mix of both electrical and non-electrical campsites to choose from. There’s also a beach, picnic facilities, and hiking trails available.

Visit Lakeview Park Beach, Oshawa

If you’re looking for some fun Oshawa activities, why not head to Lakeview Park Beach on a sunny day? Spend your day enjoying the refreshing waters of Lake Ontario, or have a picnic at the picnic shelter (which can also be rented for larger groups or celebrations). There are washrooms available and lifeguards on duty between 11:30 am and 6:30 pm during the summer months. 

Some fun nearby facilities include the pier overlooking the Oshawa Harbor, the splash pad, the Jubilee Pavilion, and the Oshawa Museum. It’s the perfect getaway for solo travellers, romantic couples, and families looking for relaxation in the sun. 

Go Bird Watching in Altona Forest, Pickering 

The Altona Forest is a large urban forest in the City of Pickering and forms part of the Petticoat Creek watershed. Here, you have the opportunity to see over 100 bird species, 130 wildflowers, and 35 distinct vegetation varieties while exploring the 102-acre (53-ha) property. It’s an Environmentally Significant Area due to its importance both historically and to the local ecosystem. 

The Altona Forest provides visitors with 2.6 miles (4.24 km) of breathtaking trails. There are two loop trails to choose from, one in the north and one leading to Strouds Lane. Explore hardwood forests, wetlands, and meadows as you trek through this beautiful green space. 

Frenchman’s Bay East Beach, Pickering

If you’re searching for some fun things in Pickering, visit Frenchman’s Bay East Beach. It’s one of the most popular places to visit in Durham Region and the perfect spot to soak up some sun and swim in Lake Ontario. META4 Gallery, Port Perry

York-Durham Heritage Railway

The York-Durham Heritage Railway allows visitors to experience the life of a 1920s railway passenger. Visitors can take a trip aboard the original steam engine, Victoria, built-in 1912 by the Baldwin Locomotive Company in Philadelphia.

Uxbridge Quaker Meeting House

The Quaker Meeting House was built in 1847 in a Greek Revival style is one of the oldest religious and public buildings in Uxbridge. The Quaker Meeting House was built to serve as a place of worship and gathering for the Society of Friends, a Christian religious movement.

Visitors can also explore some of the artifacts collected over the years when visiting the Meeting House. Artifacts include old photographs, maps, letters, and a variety of relics from the original Quaker congregation, including an old organ and a bell used for church services.

Picnic at Elgin Park

Elgin Park provides a peaceful and perfect setting for a picnic, with various amenities to enjoy. There is a circular asphalt trail with public washrooms and two playgrounds. The park also features a baseball field, an arena belonging to the Uxbridge horsemen club, and a Rotary Bandshell for events.

There are also numerous trails throughout the woodlands, wetlands, and ponds. A 0.5km Fitness Trail loop offers fitness equipment on the way, while the Elgin Park Trail is a .75km loop, and the Elgin Pond Trail is a 1.3km loop around the pond.

Historic Trail – This 2.5km hiking trail allows you to explore the picturesque areas of Uxbridge through woodlands, streams, and more.

Ewen Trail – This unique 3.5km trail meanders through Uxbridge, traversing Elgin Park and historic homes while affording views of three tranquil ponds. It is an ideal combination of rural and urban scenery.

John McCutcheon Way – This stretch of the Trans Canada Trail in Uxbridge includes the restored 1872 Trestle bridge, originally part of the Toronto-Nipissing Railway.

Uxbridge, known as the Trail Capital of Canada, offers some of the best hiking in the province! With more than 300km of trails within the town and the surrounding area.

You can find great outdoor activities for all four seasons in Uxbridge! Cyclists, snowshoers, and skiers will love the many trails in the area. The Oak Ridges Trail and the Trans Canada Trail are two of the most popular, passing through Uxbridge.

Glen Major Forest & Walker Woods – The 6.1km Glen Major Forest Loop Trail, part of the Durham Regional Forest network, is perfect for those seeking a shorter outing. For a longer, more rugged, and varied trek, the Walker Woods Trail is 7.1km long and meanders through 1,500 hectares of terrain.

Secord’s Pond & Oak Ridges Trail Loop –This 4.3-kilometre path takes you along a winding journey, passing a pond, going through wetlands, and strolling through a lovely forest.

Trail Hub – On the property of the former Skyloft Ski Club, Trail Hub boasts the highest elevation in southern Ontario and the views to back it! A friend of this website and a member of our Facebook group, Eric, mentioned that the trails on the property are open to hiking, mountain biking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. In addition, they have a chalet where you’ll find Annina’s cafe and bake shop!

Visit The Thomas Foster Memorial

Thomas Foster Memorial, a stunning monument dedicated to the memory of the former Mayor of Toronto, Thomas Foster, was unveiled in 1935. It cost $250,000 and was constructed with only marble and 22-karat gold mosaics, making it a truly one-of-a-kind structure.

Inside are four grand arches held up by marble columns and three crypts that house Thomas, his wife, and his daughter. The temple is a powerful reminder of Foster’s remarkable journeys across the globe.

Brooks Farms

Edward Brooks decided to bring his family to Canada from London in the mid-1800s.

Alvin and Brenda Brooks, both fourth-generation farmers, ran their family farm with tremendous dedication and pride. They farmed crops such as corn, wheat, barley, turnips, and potatoes and raised various animals. In 1990, they found a creative way to fund their children’s education: growing pick-your-own strawberries and raspberries.

In 1998, Brooks Farms expanded its business to include pick-your-own pumpkins and created the Fall Fun Festival. It’s been over 125 years, and Brooks Farms is still “Growing Fun”!

Goodwood (Schitt’s Creek)

If you’re like us and a fan of the hit show Schitt’s Creek, head over to the nearby town of Goodwood. While the hotel from the show is near Orangeville, locations such as Bob’s Garage, Rose Apothecary, Cafe Tropical, City Hall and the Mayor’s House are all within the Goodwood area.

Golfing

Wooden Sticks – Wooden Sticks’ championship golf courses were designed by renowned golf architect Tom Fazio, giving golfers a unique and challenging experience. Wooden Sticks offers a selection of replica holes from some of the most renowned courses worldwide. You can play the famed 12th and 13th at Augusta, the Island Green 17th at TPC Sawgrass, the Postage Stamp from Troon, and the 17th and 18th from St. Andrews.

Richters Herbs

Richters Herbs is a family-owned herb farm and garden retail founded in 1974. Richters Herbs carries a variety of herbs, vegetables, and spices, as well as flowers, trees, and shrubs.

In addition to its retail center, Richters Herbs offers educational courses on herbs for culinary and medicinal purposes. These courses are offered at their farm and throughout the Uxbridge area, and range from beginner to advanced level.

We make a day trip every spring to grab our cooking herbs and mint for tea (Morrocan Mint) ((more than five varieties of mint alone). The variety and quality is incredible and well worth the drive.

Their diverse selection offers something for everyone, from sweet to dry. Our personal favourites:

Honey Habanero – Combining honey from 3 Boyz Bees and Habanero peppers from Grattons Greatest, it has a delicious balance of summer sweetness and warmth.

Mojito de Manzana – Spanish-inspired apple mojito cider is a crisp, off-dry beverage infused with mint leaves and freshly-squeezed limes.

Raspberry Tea – This semi-sweet cider is the ideal combination of tart raspberry and the silky flavor of earl grey tea. Its off-dry taste is especially noticeable on the nose and finish, making it the perfect way to bid farewell to summer and welcome the start of fall.

Pineapple Mimosa – IInfused with the sweetness of fresh pineapples its a perfect pairing of tart pineapple and citrus flavours balanced with champagne-style bubbles.

So when York Durham Headwaters invited a group of travel writers and the Road Trip Ontario team to ice fishing, our first thought was:
How far north will we have to go? North Bay? Thunder Bay? Hudson’s Bay? Nunavut?” and “Where are our snow pants?” 

Although ice fishing is what piqued our interest, let’s take a look at some things to do in Port Perry as one of the best weekend getaways from Toronto!

The History Of Port Perry, Ontario

• Port Perry was first surveyed back in 1809, and the first family who settled in the town came in 1821. They were of European descent.
• In 1852 the village in Scugog was named Port Perry after Peter Perry – a reform leader in the Ontario Legislature. Perry was the main person behind the town’s planning and development.
• Canada’s oldest grain elevator, which has survived many fires, earthquakes, and demolition, still sits on the shores of Lake Scugog.

Getting From Toronto To Port Perry

Getting from Toronto to Port Perry is pretty straightforward.
Jump on the DVP (Don Valley Parkway) to Highway 401 and head East.
Take exit 410, onto Highway 12 Northbound and follow Highway 12 north through Whitby, past Brooklin and Myrtle to Manchester.
Turn east (right) in Manchester at Highway 7A and follow it to Port Perry.

The Piano Inn and Cafe

If you opted to spend the night here in the former Lenard Building – a refurbished historical landmark built in the 18th century, you can either return for lunch or start the day with one of the Inn’s most recommended dishes. French onion soup, couscous salad, Brie and Pear grilled sandwiches, crustless quiche, creamy mac & cheese, and lobster salad.

Pantry Shelf

A trendy breakfast spot here in Port Perry is the Pantry Shelf patio and tea room. They are known for their baked goods; croissants, butter tarts, apple fritters and carrot cake. Ideally, it would be great to grab a seat outside and people-watch as Palmer Park is across the street. But since it was winter and the patio was closed, we found a cozy corner inside. The daily special was a sandwich and soup; we went for the veggies soup and ham and cheddar sandwich.

Palmer Park

Speaking of Palmer Park, Palmer Park has the best view of Scugog lake, plus splash pads, a playground area for kids, picnic tables and a walking trail that will bring you to all corners of the park. Palmer Park is also the official spot for Port Perry’s local events and festivals.

Old Mill

Known locally as “Old Mill,” Port Perry’s grain elevator is the oldest one still standing in Canada! It was built in 1874, and it’s become almost synonymous with the town. If you’re looking for a full history of the grain elevator, you can find it over at Scugog Heritage.

Scugog Ice Adventures & Ice Fishing

It’s hard to believe that we were only one hour away from the very hectic concrete jungle of Toronto and now standing on the shores of Lake Scugog, gazing out at the vast openness of snow and ice. We were able could make out these bright yellow fishing huts way, way off into the distance in the middle of a lake! 

Located in Port Perry Marina, Scugog Ice Adventures is an ideal getaway for lovers of winter fishing and beginners like us city people willing to give it a go. With over 20 years of fishing knowledge on Lake Scugog, they have a pretty good idea of where all the fish hang out. 

Lake Scugog has plenty of largemouth/smallmouth bass, perch, black crappie, and catfish. 

Aside from the required fishing license, the good people at Scugog Ice Adventures will set up your location, take you out to your heated huts, drill the holes, and supply the lines and the minnows – tools you need to catch fish.

Port Perry Downtown

One of the best things to do in Port Perry is a stroll along Port Perry’s historic downtown – which is one of York Durham’s prettiest little towns. With loads of boutique shops that line the Victorian streets, from Lake Scugog with its Old Mill – Canada’s oldest grain elevator, up towards the Town Hall Theatre. Everything from bamboo organic yoga clothes and antiques/treasures to custom-designed jewelry, handmade gifts and handcrafted miniatures.

Often used as a filming location because of its small-town “American” feel, it’s currently being transformed into the fictional town Lakeside for the show American Gods.  Port Perry has been the backdrop, Hemlock Grove, The West Wing, Welcome To Mooseport, and Fly Away Home.

Marwan’s Global Bistro & The Port Social 

Marwan’s restaurant is littered with photos of the owner, Marwan featuring his travels, which he credits as the source of his extensive knowledge of different foods found on the menu. Marwan himself recommended his curry dishes, Butter Chicken, Veggie Tikka Masala, Thai Red Curry, Thai Red Curry with Chicken, and Thai Red Curry with Shrimp. 

We went with the Butter Chicken Breast, Creamy Wild Tomato Curry Sauce with Fresh Rice – Let’s just say we were thrilled with our choices. 

Marwan’s Global Bistro also offers prime rib, sausage platters & spicy Mexican meatballs. For vegans and plant-based eaters, they serve a variety of delicious veggie burgers, smoked cauliflower tacos, quinoa bowls, veggie tikka masala, grilled veggie sandwiches, a veggie curry dish, Thai vegan red curry, and more.
Right beside Marwan’s Global Bistro is Marwan’s other business, The Port Social, where he serves tapas, beers, cocktails, wine & spirits. The bar features live music on the weekends and expertly crafted cocktails!

Port Perry Post Office

The very first post office of Port Perry opened in 1852, and the first postmaster was a man named Joseph Bigelow. The post office was built in 1914 and would have been torn down if a group of locals hadn’t convinced the officials that it had historic value.

Hank’s Pastries LTD

We were first introduced to Hank’s Pastries while ice fishing. Scugog Ice Adventures had a Tim Horton’s carafe (Canada’s favourite coffee) and a box of Hank’s large apple fritters shipped out to us in the huts. The apple fritter is so large that it’s impossible to finish. Out of all the things to do in Port Perry, this is not to be missed.

Hank’s has been in the business since the mid-1800s, and they are known for their delicious and freshly baked treats. From meat pies, fruit bread and buns to cookies, old-fashioned scratch donuts, huge apple fritters and Mille Feuille (custard cake).

For the record, “scratch-baking” is the old-fashioned way of only using all-natural ingredients with no fillers or preservatives.

Port Perry United Church

Port Perry United Church, part of The United Church of Canada, opened in 1925 and can accommodate about 200 worshippers.

Town Hall Theatre

Town Hall Theatre has been at the centre of arts and culture for over half a decade. They offer a variety of entertainment, from dance, to theatre, live music, and more. The building itself was established in 1873.

Reflection Park

Reflection Park was opened as a memorial park in 2008 and was attended by Port Perry’s respected government officials and local war veterans. It resulted from student nine, who volunteered their talents and skills to the project. 

War Memorial Library (Now Closed)

War Memorial Library was constructed in 1934 but only officially operated the following year.

Caviar and Cobwebs

Caviar & Cobwebs is a boutique store that sells legitimate collectibles and antiques. Everything from hard-to-find jewellery and linens to books, memorabilia and art. Gordana picked up a Hammersley & Co. teacup and saucer that dates back to the 1930s

Herrington’s Quality Butchers

Right beside Caviar & Cobwebs is Herrington’s, which I had the pleasure of trying their delicious dry salami while ice fishing on Lake Scugog. Ex-Farmer, Brent visits many of the farms that he buys his meat from. In addition to that, he was a finalist in Ontario’s Finest Butcher Competition.

Old Flame Brewery

The Old Flame Brewing Company is located in the restored former Ontario Carriage Works building built in the 18th century. The tasting room is filled with rustic and wooden decorations, most of which tie together the building’s history. Comfortable couches, high tops and regular tables invite you to bring your own food, and pets are welcome.

The Nutty Chocolatier

The Nutty Chocolatier uses 100% of the finest Callebaut chocolate imported from Belgium and is considered one of Ontario’s best-handcrafted chocolate makers.  I have no idea who Callebaut is, but I definitely tried Belgium chocolates when I was in Belgium. They have gelatin, gluten, milk, sugar-free, truffles, nut clusters, and barks.

Captain George Fish & Chips

I’ve eaten fish and chips everywhere, from England to Ireland, and there is a definite science to doing them right. Captain George serves up decent fish & chips – Perfectly fried (not greasy), traditional breaded halibut, fries, coleslaw, a lemon wedge and tartar sauce. We advise getting extra tartar sauce; it’s homemade and tastes incredible.

There are plenty of places to stay in Port Perry if you’re looking for a place to crash after a night out. Our favourite is The Piano Inn and Cafe, located in the town’s heart. Just know that they book up early, so it’s worth booking in advance.

Perfect if you’re planning on spending the night in Port Perry, just passing through or grabbing a bite to eat. The Piano Inn & Cafe is located in the heart of downtown Port Perry, and the historic building has five private upscale suites steps away from boutiques, dining and Lake Scugog Marina.

If The Piano Inn is full, we’d recommend the nearby Nestleton Waters Inn (about a 10-15 minute drive from Port Perry). It’s a great spot to spend the night. If you’re looking for a bed and breakfast, there are a few B&Bs in the town, including Willow Pond Bed and Breakfast, Country Corner B&B, Beechcroft B&B and Heath & Haven.

Scugog Shores Museum Village

The Scugog Shores Museum Village is a historical museum located on the southern end of Scugog Island and is home to various restored historic buildings, including a school, log cabin, blacksmith, and more! The museum is also set in a renovated old school with thousands of artifacts.

The Scugog Shores Museum is also home to the Ojibway Heritage Interpretive Lands. Created in partnership with the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation, the Ojibway Heritage Interpretive Lands is home to a birch bark canoe, a wigwam, and a collection of indigenous plants and trees.

How to Get to the Pickering Museum Village

Pickering Museum Village is located on the south side of Highway 7 between Brock Road and Westney Road. There are several ways to get from Toronto to Pickering – by bus, train or taxi. Alternatively, travel by car and include it in your Ontario road trip.

Toronto to Pickering by Bus or Train

The average journey time from Toronto to Pickering is around 1.5 hours by bus, and 41 minutes by train. These are operated by GO Transit, departing from Union Station Bus Terminal, and arriving at Brock Road. Bus and train tickets cost roughly the same (between $13 CAD and $18 CAD). 

Toronto to Pickering by Taxi

The fastest way to get from Toronto to Pickering is by taxi. While this is the quickest method, taking around 29 minutes, it is also more expensive. The cost from Toronto to Pickering via taxi is between $95 CAD and $120 CAD. 

Toronto to Pickering by Car

Pickering Museum – Important Visitor Information

Pickering Village Museum is a popular destination among locals and people visiting Ontario. To ensure your visit is a pleasant one, here is everything you need to know. 

Pickering Museum Village Hours 

Currently, Pickering Village Museum is only open for pre-booked programs and tours. To book a tour or program, visit the Pickering Village website. Generally, the villages hours of operation are as follows:

July until Labour Day:
Wednesday to Saturday: 10 am to 4:30 pm 
Sunday: Noon to 4:30 pm 

June and September:
Saturday: 10 am to 4:30 pm 
Sunday: Noon to 4:30 pm 

Note that admissions are only allowed until 3:30 pm. The museum is also open for private and school tours from April to December.

At Pickering Museum Village, all are welcome. General admission varies depending on age group. Ticket prices are as follows:

Kids in the Village: Little ones can unleash their creativity at Kids in the Village. Build a craft under the guidance of the Pickering museum guides. After the craft, visit the museum’s barn exhibit. This is a fun, educational tour that lasts around 45 minutes. Registration is required in advance and tickets cost $9 per person.
