Where Are the Finger Lakes?

Located in New York state, just below Lake Ontario, the Finger Lakes is a popular vacation destination that features eleven long, narrow lakes (the area’s namesake). The lakes range in length from 4.8 km to 61 km, and the deepest lake is Seneca Lake, with a maximum depth of 188 m.

It’s also an ideal location for growing grape vines for winemaking, attracting many unique and world-class vineyards.

How to Get to the Finger Lakes Region

If you are looking for a beautiful road trip opportunity, this is it! The drive from Toronto to the Finger Lakes will take approximately 4-5 hours, depending on border delays, traffic, and what area of the region you are headed to. After crossing the border in Niagara Falls, you can take either I-90 E or I-490 E. Both routes offer stunning views, making it an enjoyable trip.

For those who prefer air travel, there are 3 major airports surrounding the area. However, they will all require you to take a cab or use a rideshare program (like Uber or Lyft) to get from the airport to your desired spot in the Finger Lakes. Your airport options include Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport (ROC, 45 min drive away), Syracuse Hancock International Airport (SYR, 1 hr and 15 min drive away), and Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BUF, 1 hr and 30 min drive away). If you have the time, we recommend extending your trip to explore the area around the airport after you fly in (or before you leave. Both Rochester and Buffalo, New York, are great destinations!

Whether you’re looking for a more mainstream hotel experience or a rustic cabin-like location for an outdoor-focused adventure, you can find the ideal accommodation for your getaway. Here are a few of our recommendations: 

The Park Inn

37 Shethar St, Hammondsport, NY

A warm and welcoming blend of historic architecture and modern touches, the Park Inn made us feel at home from the moment we arrived. Five suites are located on the second floor above The Restaurant at The Park Inn. Each room offers a king- or queen-sized bed, and most rooms also include a private seating area or living space. This is where we stayed during our recent trip to the area, and we would definitely return!

If you’re travelling with a larger group, they also have a separate farmhouse rental called Glenn Scott Manor, located down the road from the Point of the Bluff Vineyards. Here, you’ll find accommodations for up to 9 guests, plus a kitchen, wrap-around deck, and beautiful property to enjoy.

For families, the inn restricts guests to 13 and over to protect its historic nature. If you have younger children, you will need to consider other options (so keep reading).  

The Lake House on Canandaigua

770 S Main St, Canandaigua, NY

Travellers searching for a modern, luxury experience when considering the best hotels in Finger Lakes, NY, should check out The Lake House on Canandaigua. This resort location is the ideal spot for a lake retreat. The property is right on the water, providing a stunning view and access to water-related activities like kayaking, canoeing, paddle boarding, pedal boats, and a floating trampoline.

Willowbrook Spa, also found on the property, allows you to plan for a little pampering during your visit. From relaxing hot stone massages to clarifying facials, there are many relaxing services to choose from. The property also features several dining options, including the Rose Tavern, Sand Bar, Library, and Pool Bar & Grill.

Pet-friendly travellers will be happy to know that the resort welcomes dogs under 35 pounds with a flat fee of $100 plus a nightly cleaning charge of $50. Upon arrival, canine visitors will also be spoiled with a dog bed and a welcome bag of toys and treats. 

Single Island Shores

5761 Rabbit Run Rd, Hector, NY

Another fun option when choosing a place to stay is to book a cottage—especially a cottage with a lake view, which allows you to take advantage of the beauty of the region. If this sounds like your dream getaway, we recommend Single Island Shores. During our recent visit, we had the pleasure of staying here and experiencing their iconic sunset views.

Depending on the size of your family or group, there are several cottage options, including a single (sleeps four), double (sleeps six), 4-bedroom (sleeps 10-14), or the Lakefront Grand Chalet (sleeps 14).

Single Island Shores is a family-owned and operated destination. The Alexander family has put their hearts into creating the perfect spot for guests of all ages. The property offers fire pits with seating and gas grills, as well as a playground for the kids.

Dogs under 30 lbs are allowed in designated pet-friendly cottages for $50 per night. All pups must be at least nine months old, fully house-trained, and approved in advance. Cats and larger dogs are not permitted. There are also restrictions against Pit Bulls, Chows, Dobermans, German Shepherds or Rottweilers, regardless of size, age, or training.

The Finger Lakes region encompasses a large area with several towns and villages, creating many opportunities for visitors of all ages and interests to enjoy. We couldn’t possibly cover everything in the region, but we have created a round-up of our favourite Finger Lakes activities and attractions to help you start building your own travel itinerary: 

Explore the Village of Hammondsport

This quaint village may be small, with only around 500 residents, but don’t let that fool you. Hammondsport, NY, has so much to see and do for visitors.

Hammondsport embraces and proudly shares its history. This balance of the past and present creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere. We took some time to walk through the village square, where we discovered unique shops, art galleries, and some amazing restaurants (more on those to follow).

You will also find some incredible, award-winning wineries located in and around the village, which has earned it the title “Heart of the New York Wine Country.” 

Frey Opera House

61-63 Shether Street, Hammondsport

A beautiful tribute to Hammondsport’s past, the Frey Opera House dates back to approximately 1901. Its historic architecture has been well maintained over the years as the building’s occupants changed and evolved. A commemorative plaque honours its origins.

In 1985, it became home to Opera House Antiques, a multi-dealer shop specializing in antiques and collectibles, such as furniture, jewellery, prints and paintings, quilts, period clothing, and more. If this sounds like something you would enjoy, we recommend exploring the various vendor booths to find a one-of-a-kind souvenir from your trip. 

Depot Park

7 Water St, Hammondsport

While most of the things to do in Finger Lakes on this list are focused on museums and the area’s history, this is a nice opportunity to relax and embrace the area’s beauty. Depot Park is a public park located on the shores of Keuka Lake. Here, you can enjoy a picnic with the family (or that special someone), go swimming during the summer months, and enjoy some fresh air.

There is a roped-off swimming area supervised by lifeguards from 12 to 5:30 PM daily during the summer months. Bathrooms and changerooms are also available. 

Glenn H. Curtiss Museum

8419 NY-54, Hammondsport

Whether you have a general love of history or, specifically, the history of aviation, the Glenn H. Curtiss Museum is worth a visit. Named after Glenn Hammond Curtiss, a pioneer in the world of aviation, the museum is dedicated to collecting, restoring, and displaying artifacts that help share the history of flight and other transportation methods.

The featured exhibit, “Teaching the World to Fly,” examines the history of the building’s namesake, from his first aircraft purchase and the opening of the Curtiss School of Aviation to the operations of the Curtiss Flying Service up to the beginning of World War II. It’s a fascinating glimpse into the significant impact Glenn H. Curtiss had on the world of aviation and the Air Wing of the military.

The museum showcases an impressive collection of classic aircraft (originals, restorations, and reproductions) from 1904 to 1951. It also has antique automobile (1904-1931), bicycle (1865-1900), and motorcycle (1904-1930) collections, allowing you to literally walk through the history of transportation. 

Finger Lakes Boat Museum

8231 Pleasant Valley Rd, Hammondsport

Another transportation-focused museum, the Finger Lakes Boat Museum specifically explores the world of boating over the years. Here, you will see a collection of miniature and to-scale steamboats, outboard and inboard motors throughout the years, a boat restoration shop, an interactive rowing simulator, and other nautical exhibits.

This museum offers activities for the whole family, including a kids’ play area and the opportunity to build a model sailboat.

In addition to the museum exhibits, you can also enjoy their collection of boat-themed artwork, including murals, original paintings, and framed prints. We also recommend taking a cruise on The Pat II, which will take you on a historical tour of Keuka Lake. 

Watkins Glen State Park

Outdoor adventure lovers, here’s an option for you. Watkins Glen State Park has earned the reputation of being the most famous of the state parks in the Finger Lakes region, and for good reason. The breathtaking views this park offers can’t be beat!

If you’re looking for hiking in the Finger Lakes, the park offers three different trails—the Southern Rim Trail, the Indian Trail, and the Gorge Trail. During our hike, we were treated to waterfalls, stone bridges, and a view of the 400-foot-deep gorge cut through the rock by Glen Creek. However, it should be noted that the trails do include more than 800 stone steps, meaning they’re not ideal for those with mobility limitations.

Depending on the season, this is also a popular spot for other outdoor activities, including camping, fishing, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. There is also a playground, several picnic tables and pavilions, grills, and a gift shop.  

Finger Lakes National Forest

Caywood Point

Another opportunity to embrace the region’s natural beauty, Finger Lakes National Forest spans over 16,000 acres with over 30 miles of trails to explore. During our visit, we went to Caywood Point, a forest section bordering Seneca Lake. Here, you can access the Fossenvue Trail, a gravel path that takes you through the forest with some steep sections and beautiful panoramic views, but it’s also a great place to go for a swim and cool off on a warm day.

While there is a lot of information available online to learn about the forest, the best way to find out about hiking options and other opportunities is to visit the Finger Lakes National Forest – Hector Ranger Station (5218 State Route 414, Hector). 

Hector Falls

Located on the eastern shores of Seneca Lake, Hector Falls is an impressive 165-foot-high waterfall. The water cascades over several drops and passages, spanning over 250 feet combined down the hill. Not only is it an incredible sight, but it’s also conveniently located just off the highway, with one part flowing under Rt. 414. This makes it accessible for all visitors to view, unlike some of the most challenging trails leading to other waterfalls in the area.

While the falls are always beautiful and worth seeing, the water levels fluctuate based on the weather and season. During dry summers, the water slows to just a small trickle. However, after a heavy rain, the high water levels create a stunning display. 

Corning Museum of Glass

1 Museum Way, Corning

Are you a lover of the arts? If so, you should plan to visit the Corning Museum of Glass. Established in 1951, this not-for-profit museum now holds the title of “the world’s largest space dedicated to the display of contemporary art and design in glass,” as declared on the museum’s website.

Here, you will learn about the history of glass and glassmaking, the role glasswork has played throughout history, and the science behind some of the greatest glass-related innovations. You can also register for beginner-friendly Make Your Own Glass workshops on the website. These workshops are booked quickly, so check the available workshop dates/themes and reserve your spot as soon as possible. 

Rockwell Museum

111 Cedar St, Corning 

Another incredible museum worth checking out is the Rockwell Museum, which is dedicated to American art. The exhibits here will take you through a collection of art through the ages, painting a picture of how art reflected the growing and changing culture of America.

The museum is home to a vast collection of works, including drawings, paintings, sculptures, and photography. However, in addition to the permanent collection, they host many rotating spotlight exhibitions highlighting talented American artists. For example, at the time of writing this, there is an exhibition dedicated to the photography of William Wegman, a photographer known for his images of dogs, specifically Weimaraners.

They also host many programs and events, including adult-only programming and family-friendly opportunities. We recommend checking the online Events Calendar when planning your visit.

John W. Jones Museum

1250 Davis St, Elmira

This historic home was once the home of John W. Jones, an agent in the Underground Railroad who assisted in the escape of 800 runaway slaves. After falling into disarray, it was condemned and scheduled for demolition in 1997. However, a group of concerned citizens led by Lucy Brown saved the building and transformed it into the John W. Jones Museum, commemorating Jones and his actions.

As you walk through the building, you can read about the selfless acts Jones carried out throughout his life. Displays outline the steps he took, from sheltering the fugitives (sometimes bringing them into his own home) to arranging for their transportation to Niagara Falls. You can also learn about his role as the sexton for Woodlawn Cemetery and his tireless efforts to respectfully bury each deceased Confederate soldier from the Elmira Prison Camp. 

Bike Keuka Lake Outlet Trail

Often called the “Outlet Trail,” the Keuka Lake Outlet Trail stretches from Penn Yan to the inlet along Seneca Lake. There are over 11 km (more than 7 miles) of trails to explore, offering creek views, waterfalls, and beautiful wooded areas. We rented bikes from Shoreline Rentals during our stay, but the trail is also a popular destination for horseback riding and hiking in the Finger Lakes.

The trail is maintained by the non-profit organization Friends of the Outlet, Inc. They offer detailed maps and a guidebook for those interested in learning more about the trail’s history and various points of interest. An audio tour is also available on their website. 

Best Wineries and Vineyards in the Finger Lakes Region 

As the title of this guide reveals, the area is well known for its many award-winning wineries and vineyards. Knowing this, we couldn’t share things to do in Finger Lakes, NY, without listing some of our favourite wine-related destinations. Wine lovers will be happy to learn that there are so many worthwhile places to visit that you could easily plan an entire weekend just focusing on the area’s wine industry. Here are a few of our favourites to help get you started:

Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery

9749 Middle Rd, Hammondsport

The first vines of this beautiful and historic vineyard were planted in 1958 by Dr. Konstantin Frank, a pioneer in the New York winemaking movement. Four generations later, the family continues to operate the 70-acre vineyard overlooking Keuka Lake. Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery offers several different tasting packages and options, from a garden-style experience in Eugenia’s Garden to more in-depth explorations of all the vineyard has to offer. 

Hazlitt 1852 Vineyards

5712 NY-414, Hector

Best known for their flagship Red Cat wine (we bought two bottles and LOVED it), Hazlitt 1852 Vineyards has a long history of grape production and winemaking in the area. In fact, this winery can trace back its story to the purchase of 153 acres of land by David Hazlitt and Clarissa Roberts Hazlitt in 1852. Today, it continues to be operated by the 7^th generation of the Hazlitt family. During our tour and tasting, we learned a cute little rhyme: “Red Cat, Red Cat, it’s an aphrodisiac, Red Cat, Red Cat, it will get them in the sack!” Hee hee 

Heron Hill Winery

9301 Co Rd 76, Hammondsport 

Founded in 1972 by John, a former English teacher in Colorado, and his loving wife Jo, Heron Hill Winery began as a passion project on 20 acres of land in the Finger Lakes region. Today, this passion has grown into an impressive and successful winery named one of the “Top 10 Most Spectacular Tasting Rooms in the World” by Travel & Leisure Magazine. We recommend trying their world-class wines while enjoying the exceptional view of Keuka Lake from the terrace. 

J.R. Dill Winery

4922 NY-414, Burdett

Located north of Watkins Glen, J.R. Dill Winery has been in operation since 2009. The winery is a beautiful spot to enjoy a glass of wine while enjoying the stunning views of Seneca Lake. If you’re looking for a fun way to start the day, consider booking a ticket to their Bubbles & Breakfast events on select Sundays at 9:30 AM. A ticket includes live music, a mimosa, and access to an assortment of traditional breakfast foods at the breakfast bar. 

Living Roots Wine & Co.

8560 County Road 87, Hammondsport

With locations both in the Finger Lakes and the Adelaide Hills region of South Australia, Living Roots Wine & Co. was founded in 2016. While this makes it one of the newer Finger Lake, NY, wineries, don’t let that stop you. The family has a 160+ year history of winemaking, and this expertise is easy to see (and taste). If you’re in the area on a Friday, you can enjoy a glass of wine (or two), the view of Keuka Lake from the Shale Creek Vineyard, and a bite to eat from Yummy Burger, which operates a pop-up on the patio from 3:30 PM to 6:30 PM (Friday only).  

Living Roots Wine & Co. also offers an urban tasting room in Rochester, NY. 

Point of The Bluff Vineyards

10489 Co Rd 76, Hammondsport

Another of the best vineyards in the Finger Lakes, Point of the Bluff Vineyards creates a unique experience for its visitors with beautiful views, incredible wine, live acoustic music, bocce courts, light food, and a weekly Farmers’ Market from 5 PM to 7 PM on Thursdays. This is owned by the same people as The Park Inn (and The Park Inn restaurant), Crooked Lake Ice Cream Company, and Concerts at Point of the Bluff, an outdoor concert venue. 

Red Newt Cellars

3675 Tichenor Rd, Hector

Another great local winery, Red Newt Cellars was founded in 1998 by David and Debra Whiting. They began with a focus on reds, with their first white wines being released at the grand opening of the winery and restaurant itself in 1999. If you are in the area during the week, check out their Winemaker Wednesdays event, where their expert winemaker, Christina Zapel, takes you through a tasting while sharing knowledge about the vineyards and the wine itself. This is a great option if you have any questions about the winemaking process. 

Ryan William Vineyard

4156 NY-414, Burdett 

Since 1999, the Ryan William Vineyard has been dedicated to producing 100% Estate Grown and Bottle wine. In addition to allowing maximum control over the flavours and quality of their wines, this also allows them to demonstrate their commitment to low-impact farming practices and protecting the Finger Lakes region in their operations. Their tasting room, known as The Tasting Barn, also features a café, run by Ryan’s wife Samira, where you can enjoy incredible farm-to-fork offerings, supporting local farmers and businesses. 

Best Restaurants in Finger Lakes, New York (Besides Wineries)

Of course, no getaway is complete without the opportunity to explore the area’s culinary scene – especially when it offers as many tasty options as the Finger Lakes! Here are a few of our favourite spots to eat or grab a drink in the region:

Amity Coffee Co.

3 Main St, Penn Yan

One of our favourite breakfast spots in the area, Amity Coffee Co., has everything you need to start your day on the right foot. This includes a great cup of coffee (a morning essential) and a breakfast menu with delicious options like the smoked salmon bagel, egg sandwich, or chipotle breakfast bowl. Elevate your breakfast experience with one of their homemade butter croissants. 

Babes & Buds Coffee Lounge and Boutique

103 3rd St, Watkins Glen

Another great breakfast and coffee spot, Babes  & Buds Coffee Lounge and Boutique, offers an assortment of traditional breakfast foods, including, of course, the NYC Bagel. The bagels are baked fresh in Brooklyn, NY, and come in a variety of flavours. They can also be topped with an assortment of tasty spreads, ranging from butter or plain cream cheese to more unique options like cinnamon sugar cream cheese or honey pecan cream cheese. There are also several vegan options here. 

The Blackberry Inn Kitchen 

309 N Franklin St, Watkins Glen

A popular breakfast and brunch spot in the Watkins Glen area of the Finger Lakes region, The Blackberry Inn Kitchen has a wide assortment of tasty baked treats. As soon as you walk in the door, you’ll be greeted by the display case with tasty treats like various cheesecakes, macarons, pretzels, croissants, muffins, and more. They also have bagels and breads baked right on site early each morning, ensuring they are fresh and ready to go when the doors open at 7 AM. 

Crooked Lake Ice Cream Company

35 Shethar St, Hammondsport

Whether you’re enjoying an adult-only getaway or travelling with the whole family, who doesn’t love ice cream? We couldn’t help but include the perfect hot weather treat in this list of things to do in Finger Lakes! Crooked Lake Ice Cream Company is a classic 50s-style diner with many tasty and unique coffee flavours. During our visit, we stopped here for both breakfast and ice cream. If you’re curious about the options or can’t choose just one, try a flight of their popular ice cream flavours. 

The Elf In The Oak

4221 NY-414, Burdett

This family-run business definitely makes the list of our favourite places to eat. The Elf In The Oak is a warm and welcoming environment with its beautiful wooden floors and statement long wooden bar. The menu features American-inspired café style food, including sandwiches, salads, French fries, sweet potato fries, and more. There are also vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options for those with dietary limitations. Pair your meal with a cold beer or one of their unique cocktails, like the Elfito! 

Grist Iron Brewing Company

4880 NY-414, Burdett

Craft beer lovers should add this spot to their Finger Lakes itinerary! Grist Iron Brewing Company is a local microbrewery founded in 2015. With 15 different beers on tap at any given time, there are options for everyone. In addition to the unique and expertly crafted beer flavours, they also have a menu of traditional pub foods, like pizzas, smoked meats, barbeque, and sandwiches. Vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options are available. We enjoyed an incredible meal here and would return in a heartbeat!

Nickel’s Pit BBQ Watkins Glen

207 N Franklin St, Watkins Glen

Another option in the Finger Lakes region for delicious BBQ eats is Nickel’s Pit BBQ Watkins Glen. We stopped here for a bite to eat and certainly weren’t disappointed. They have all the classic BBQ favourites, including pulled pork, brisket, wings, and more. Pair your meal with your choice of cocktails, wine, liquor, cider, or beer from their extensive drink menu. We should note that they do not accept reservations, which means you may have to wait for a table during your visit. But trust us, it’s worth the wait.  

Park Inn Restaurant

37 Shethar St, Hammondsport

We briefly mentioned the Park Inn Restaurant when sharing about our stay at the inn, but the restaurant deserves its own mention. Offering a farm-to-table experience, the menu features meals inspired by their locally produced and sourced ingredients. They even take this commitment to the next level by producing their own ingredients at their Glenn Scott Farm. The décor is a blend of historical and modern, creating a warm and welcoming aesthetic that is complimented by their kind staff. 

Two Goats Brewing

5027 NY-414, Burdett

This local brew pub is an excellent spot to enjoy a pint (or explore your options with a flight), grab a bite to eat, or be entertained by live music. If you fall in love with a beer, you can also purchase growlers to go. Two Goats Brewing is best known for its signature sandwich, the Beef-On-Weck, which features slow-cooked, local beef on a kimmelweck roll and topped with a mild cream sauce and horseradish. While you’re there, ask about the story behind the ceiling money… 

Union Block Italian Bistro

138 Water St, Penn Yan

Another incredible restaurant we enjoyed during our visit, Union Block Italian Bistro is the perfect spot for those craving some traditional Italian food, including all your favourites such as antipasto, pizza, and pasta. We knew we were in love the moment we saw the menu. They also have an ever-changing rotating draft list with some interesting and unique beers and ciders to choose from. Don’t forget to leave room for dessert; their mini cannoli are the perfect way to finish a fantastic meal. 

World’s Smallest Diner

473 N Franklin St, Watkins Glen 

Do you ever walk away from a one-of-a-kind experience knowing it’s a memory you can’t wait to share? That’s how we felt after visiting the World’s Smallest Diner. The name hints at its appearance, but we still couldn’t believe our eyes. Built in 2017 by Gerry Collins, the diner is only 34 square feet with a functioning kitchen. You need to include this spot in your Finger Lakes plans, if only so you can brag that you’ve eaten at the world’s smallest diner. Make sure to take pictures, or no one will believe you…

History of Buffalo, NY

You may not be surprised to hear that Buffalo, NY, is the home of Buffalo Wings. The sauce associated with these spicy wings was first created at Anchor Bar in 1964, blending Frank’s Red Hot & natural butter with paprika. When visiting Buffalo, Buffalo Wings are called Wings, but to be clear, ask for Buffalo Wings. If you are looking for any other type of wings, like BBQ or sweet & sour, they are called Chicken Wings.

John Dart invented the first machine-powered grain elevator in Buffalo in 1842. This invention, named Dart’s Elevator, was steam-powered and featured buckets moving along a conveyor belt to transfer the grain. The popularity of this invention led to other grain elevators being built in the area, eventually earning Buffalo the title “City of Grain Elevators” as the largest grain shipping port worldwide.

The original Erie Canal stretched approximately 585 km, or 363 miles, from Albany to Buffalo, NY. Built between 1817 and 1825, the waterway provided a direct route from New York City to the Midwest, allowing for impressive growth in immigration, commercial development, and agricultural development.

Thanks to inventor Nikola Tesla, Buffalo was the first city to have electricity. The first long-distance transmission of power was on November 15, 1896. It provided Buffalo with power from Niagara Falls Power Company, allowing for the use of widespread electric streetlights, which earned the city the nickname “City of Light.”

The Statler Hotel was demolished in 1968 and was the first hotel in the United States to feature a private bath in each room. Located on Washington Street, it put Buffalo on the map for luxury travellers.

By Car

The drive from Toronto to Buffalo is approximately 160 km and will take 1 hour and 40 minutes. But this doesn’t account for the time needed to cross the Canada-US border.

From Toronto, take the Gardiner Expressway West. Continue on this road which will change names several times, including Queen Elizabeth Way, On-403 W, and back to Queen Elizabeth Way. This will bring you to the Peace Bridge, where you will cross the border into the United States, specifically Buffalo, NY.

By Bus

Taking the bus is great if you prefer a more cost-effective travel option. You can travel from Toronto’s Union Station Bus Terminal to Buffalo Metropolitan Transportation Center with Greyhound for as low as $37 USD.

By Plane

A flight to Buffalo will run higher in price than most of the other options on the list, but it is also the quickest option for those who want to get to their destination as soon as possible.

The length of your flight and flight time will vary depending on the airline chosen, but most average around 4-5 hours. This includes travelling from Toronto Pearson Airport to Buffalo Niagara International Airport with a single stop.

By Train

One of the most relaxing and scenic options to travel to Buffalo, NY, would be to travel by train. Catch the VIA Rail from Toronto Union Station. You will make a connection at the Canada-US Border, where you will board a train operated by Amtrak for the rest of the trip to the Buffalo Exchange St. Train Station.

A round-trip ticket from Toronto to Buffalo with VIA Rail/Amtrak costs approximately $195 CAD for a single adult passenger.

Alternatively, if you prefer to drive to Niagara Falls, ON, you can catch the Amtrak there and travel to Buffalo, Exchange St. Train Station. A round-trip ticket for a single person travelling in coach is approximately $41 USD.

During our weekend in Buffalo, we stayed here! Located on over 40 acres of beautiful historic green space, The Richardson Hotel is a sight when visiting Buffalo. The building initially operated as part of the Richardson Olmstead Campus and served as the Buffalo State Asylum for the Insane in 1880. The property’s grounds were designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, best known for designing Central Park in New York City.

The property was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1986. Since then, the hotel has focused on balancing historical restoration and modern amenities, resulting in a unique and intriguing hotel experience.

Hotel @ the Lafayette

391 Washington St

Originally opening its doors in 1904 under the name The Lafayette Hotel, this hotel was described in the national press as “one of the most perfectly appointed and magnificent hotels in the century.” It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2010. It is also worth noting that it was designed by Louise Blanchard Bethune, America’s first female architect.

More than 100 years later, after several renovations and additions, the hotel continues to welcome guests in style. In addition to some of the largest guest suites in the city, the hotel also offers a restaurant, gift shop, game room, fitness center, salon, and over 13,500 square feet of event space. 

Curtiss Hotel

210 Franklin Street

 Originally built in 1912-1913 for office use, the first tenants of the Harlow C. Curtiss Building included the Kittinger Furniture Company, paramedical companies, and lawyers. Over the years, various companies have owned and occupied it, including a wholesale jewellery company, an office supply and furnishings dealer, and even the Workmen’s Compensation Board. The building sat unoccupied from the early 1990s until it was purchased and renovated into the Curtiss Hotel in 2017.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008, the Curtiss Hotel is now home to a 68-room luxury boutique hotel. It also features an upscale restaurant with year-round patio seating, an all-weather Urban Hot Springs experience, and the Harlow Spa.

Café Calvert

Located in The Richardson Hotel Buffalo, Café Calvert is the perfect stop for tea and coffee lovers. In addition to specialty coffee and tea blends, they offer freshly made bread, bagels, scones, and other pastries. We stopped for a coffee and a light breakfast, but if you don’t have time to stop, you can still get your morning caffeine fix with their walk-up outdoor order window.  

The Place

With a delicious menu, seasonal cocktails, and a healthy dose of Buffalo history, The Place is a great place to stop for those seeking the local neighbourhood experience. This is one of the oldest taverns in Buffalo. The building was constructed in the late 1870s, but “The Place” as it stands today dates back to the 1940s. 

Gabriel’s Gate

We already talked about the history of the Buffalo Wing, but where should you go to enjoy these iconic wings? This staple restaurant in historic Allentown is known as “The Gate” or “Gabe’s” by the locals. You’ll have your choice of a wide variety of chicken wing flavours, including their well-known (and loved) Buffalo Wings. The wings at Gabriel’s gate are always consistent and delicious, plus it’s on the Buffalo Wing Trail.

Graylynn

One of the things that set this restaurant apart is the impressive gin list with options from all over the world, including selections from France, German, Canada, Ireland, the United Kingdom, Mexico, and South Africa. Graylynn combines a classic menu with a modern and contemporary ambiance for a unique experience. While their main focus is their dinner selection, they also have brunch options.

Tipico Coffee

When selecting a breakfast spot, finding a location specializing in premium and exotic coffees is always a win! The café is located just blocks away from their roasting operations, providing them with fresh coffee selections for even those with the most refined taste. They are currently building a full tasting room that will allow them to extend their love of coffee by hosting events and offering classes. 

Terrace at Delaware Park

199 Lincoln Parkway

We enjoyed a delicious brunch at The Terrace. It is an upscale restaurant with a menu that will offer an elevated dining experience for any taste or dietary preference. The patio provides a stunning view of the city, including the Buffalo History Museum, Albright Knox Art Gallery, Delaware Park, and Hoyt Lake. If you are lucky enough to stop by on a Sunday, they are best known for their Sunday Jazz Brunch.

Gene McCarthy’s + Old First Ward Brewing

73 Hamburg Street

The second location on our list to also be included on the Buffalo Wing Trail, Gene McCarthy’s, offers a selection of pub-style favourites, including fish and chips, smoked pulled pork sandwiches, street tacos, and chicken wings. It is in a part of town called First Ward or Old First Ward, which is predominantly Irish, hence the Irish name. In addition to offering great food, it is also the site of Old First Ward Brewing Company, one of 50+ local breweries. 

Duende

85 Silo City Row

A great spot to enjoy dinner, drinks and live jazz music, Duende embodies the soul of Buffalo. It is located in Silo City, a new area where they are repurposing old unused grain silos to bring new life and opportunities. The menu includes various delicious options, including smoked brisket sliders, mini beef wellingtons, candied pork belly, and a selection of smoked chicken wing flavours.  

Five Points Bakery

44 Brayton Street

The Five Points Bakery has made a commitment to supporting local farms, offering food made from locally sourced wheat, honey, milk, eggs, and other goods. Their menu features an assortment of dressed-up toast plates and jams, spreads, and other tasty options. It’s a great place to start your day with a fresh breakfast before heading out to explore the many Buffalo attractions. 

Remedy House

This all-day coffee bar is perfect for breakfast sandwiches with freshly roasted coffee. If you are in the area later in the day, they also have light meal options for lunch and a limited wine and beer menu. For those that fall in love with their coffee options, they also sell coffee beans for you to enjoy at home.

Breezy Burrito Bar

Breezy Burrito is the place to go when you just want a delicious taco! Their menu boasts an array of delicious signature entrees such as chimichangas, quesadillas, enchiladas, and their award-winning dry rub wings that are sure to make your mouth water.

They also offer a wide selection of appetizers like chips and salsa, cheese dip, jalapeño poppers, and potato skins. If you’re looking for something lighter, they have a variety of salads and wraps.

Best Places to Grab a Drink in Buffalo, NY

Among the things to do in Buffalo is the opportunity to check out the incredible local breweries. Big Ditch Brewing, Resurgence Brewing Company and Community Beer Works were the original breweries that started the microbrewery movement in Buffalo. Today, there are over 50 local breweries to explore between Buffalo and Niagara.

We found many great places to stop for a beer or cocktail and relax with friends, including the new friends you’ll meet in the welcoming and friendly city. 

Ballyhoo

One of our favourite bars in Buffalo, Ballyhoo, is a great place to grab a beer or enjoy one of their signature Jam Session cocktails. If you stop in, my friend Drew from Visit Buffalo Niagara advises getting the ice cream sandwich – You won’t be disappointed! As you relax and enjoy your drinks, you will likely catch a whiff of the Cheerios scent from the General Mills factory across the street.  

Fattey Beer Company

This dog-friendly brewery features a bottle shop and tap room. In addition to their wide selection of craft beers, they also offer wine, cider, seltzer, sodas, and non-alcoholic drinks. For beer enthusiasts that intend on visiting regularly, they offer a Mug Club with many great benefits, including a chance to taste rare and exclusive beers, a free mug fill on your birthday, and discounted pricing. 

Big Ditch Brewing

55 E. Huron Street

When the Erie Canal was first presented, it was jokingly called “Clinton’s Big Ditch.” Recognizing that this piece of history forever changed Buffalo, this brewery pays tribute to its roots with its name. Since opening in 2014, Big Ditch Brewing has grown to be Buffalo’s largest brewery. In their taproom, you can choose from an assortment of popular beers or live on the edge by tasting one of the limited-time experimental brews. 

Resurgence Brewing Company

The culture and environment at Resurgence Brewing Company is one of fun and community. They encourage visitors to “experience beer” in their taproom and beer garden. If you’re interested in learning about the history of the brewery, the brewing process, and the equipment they use, book a spot in their weekly Saturday Brewery Tours.  

Community Beer Works

Community Beer Works offers a fun, community-focused atmosphere with events like Karaoke and live music performances on the calendar. While the brewery dates to 2012, the current taproom and production facility opened in 2018. This location includes the tasting room, a full restaurant, and both front and back patios. They are committed to the community, donating a portion of their profits to local charities and organizations. 

Lucky Day

Are you more of a whiskey drinker? If so, Lucky Day is a stop that you need to add to your list. With over 500 options on their whiskey list, there will surely be new and exciting varieties for you to explore. The saloon atmosphere inside the bar will take you back in time. Pay careful attention to the artwork and décor, as many paintings include a hidden joke that only the sharpest eye will catch.

With so many fun things to do in Buffalo, this weekend getaway was jam-packed. From exploring the architecture and history of the city to enjoying the annual Queen City Jazz Festival, we enjoyed every minute of our time there. But before you pack your bags and hit the road, let’s take a moment to highlight some of the best things to do in Buffalo… 

Visit the Buffalo Naval & Military Park

With a mission to “Honor, Educate, Inspire, and Preserve,” the Buffalo Naval & Military Park is a fascinating place for anyone interested in the nation’s military history and is suitable for the whole family. It is open seasonally from late March to November. Take a self-guided tour of several decommissioned naval vessels, including USS The Sullivans (DD-537), USS Little Rock, USS Croaker (Submarine, SSK-246), and the museum. Reserve your tickets online for faster admission on the day of your visit. 

Go Shopping at the Elmwood Village Farmers Market

Located on Bidwell Parkway at Elmwood Avenue, the Elmwood Village Farmers Market is the place to find a wide selection of local vendors selling fresh produce, fruits, baked goods, and more. The market runs every Saturday from May 7^th to the end of November and is open from 8 AM to 1 PM. While there, we tried the pop-tarts from Butter Block. They have a location in town and a pop-up shop at the market. If you have an opportunity to try them, they are delicious! 

Explore the Gardens During Garden Walk Buffalo

This is a fun option if you are searching for free things to do in Buffalo, NY. Garden Walk Buffalo is a self-guided tour with more than 300 gardeners around the city, making it the largest garden tour in the US. To participate, just pick up a free map guiding you to all the creative public and private gardens.

In addition to its impressive size, the garden tour offers a look at the quirky “Buffalo style” of gardening. Rather than landscaping, “by the book,” Buffalo gardeners embrace their unique personality when bringing their garden spaces to life. They play with colours, shapes, and spaces to ensure that no two gardens are alike.

This gardening style can be traced back to rough economic times in the city. Finances were tight, and residents didn’t have the funds to spend on the aesthetic appearance of their homes and other buildings. Instead, they discovered they could tap into their creativity and use gardening to beautify their space on a budget. 

Spend Time in Beautiful Delaware Park

Covering 350 acres, Delaware Park is the largest of the original parks in Buffalo. It features walking paths, a quarry garden, unique structures like the Spire Head House, and beautiful Hoyt Lake. You can explore the area on foot or by water with rowboat and FLOATmingo paddle boat rentals or by booking a gondola tour of Hoyt Lake and the Japanese Gardens. 

Take In the History of the Colored Musicians Club and the Queen City Jazz Festival

The Colored Musicians Club & Jazz Museum is an important cultural and historical landmark. It is the only continuously running all-Black-owned music venue in the United States. The museum is dedicated to preserving the history of African-American Music in Buffalo and around the world. The museum is currently undergoing a $2.95 million renovation and expansion that includes improvements to the handicap accessibility in the building and a new flexible rehearsal and event space.

Queen City Jazz Festival

One of the most popular events hosted by the Colored Musicians Club & Jazz Museum is the Queen City Jazz Festival. Held yearly on the last weekend in July, the festival is free and open daily to the public from 1 PM to 8 PM. This is an opportunity for the whole family to enjoy live music and celebrate the art and history of jazz. 

Enjoy the Unique Architecture of the City

Learn about the fascinating history of Buffalo by discovering some of the architecturally significant buildings around the city. Architecture tours are available for those interested in a guided tour, or you can explore the city to take in the sites on your own. Examples of buildings we recommend viewing include:

Hotel at the Lafayette, Trademark Collection by Wyndham: This building was designed by Louise Blanchard Bethune, the first official female architect in the United States.

Guaranty Building & Interpretive Center: This early skyscraper, built between 1895-1896, features a complete terra cotta exterior giving it a breathtaking appearance.

Buffalo City Hall: Built and dedicated in the early 1930s, the historic city hall building sits on a ground area of 71,700 square feet. Experts credit the style of the building for inspiring the style and design of the city that followed.

Connecticut Street Armory: This large castle-like building was built in 1899 out of Medina sandstone. It was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1995. 

Tour the Frank Lloyd Wright’s Martin House

Designed by renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright, this breathtaking example of nature-inspired architecture is a sight to behold. The house was built between 1902 and 1905 for businessman Darwin D. Martin and his family. The Martin House was restored in 1992 and converted into a public historic house museum, allowing visitors to view its beautiful design elements, including art glass, light fixtures, and Wright-designed furniture. Tours cost $25 USD for adults and $10 USD for students and last 1 hour and 15 minutes. 

Visit the Buffalo History Museum

For those interested in fully immersing themselves in the city’s history, the Buffalo History Museum is a must-visit location. The museum is open daily (except Mondays and Tuesdays) with pay-what-you-wish admission, but the recommended admission is $10 USD per person. Exhibits to explore include:

Dabble in the Arts by Visiting the Buffalo AKG Art Museum & Burchfield Penney Art Center

Art lovers can choose from two incredible locations to visit in the city (or take in both). The Buffalo AKG Art Museum is one of the oldest public art museums in the United States. It was founded in 1862 as the Buffalo Fine Arts Academy and continues adding to its remarkable collection. Tickets cost $18 USD for adults and $10 USD for Youth. Children 5 and under are free.

The Burchfield Penney Art Center was launched in 1966 and is dedicated to the work of renowned painter Charles E. Burchfield and the region’s talented artists and art. In addition to displaying its collection of works in the building, the museum hosts events like a monthly open studio where visitors are invited to explore their artistic side by experimenting with new themes and art materials. Tickets cost $10 USD for adults and $8 USD for students. Children 10 and under are free.

Embrace the Performing Arts at Shea’s Performing Arts Center and the Buffalo Theatre District

Located on Main Street, the Buffalo Theatre District is home to a collection of live theatres and movie theatres dedicated to celebrating and showcasing the performing arts. Shea’s Performing Arts Center comprises three theatres: Shea’s Smith Theatre, Shea’s 710 Theatre and Shea’s Buffalo Theatre. Each of these locations focuses on a subset of the theatre world. For example, Shea’s Buffalo Theatre is dedicated to the historical creativity of stage vaudeville shows and has hosted many famous performers, including Frank Sinatra, the Marx Brothers, Bob Hope, and George Burns. 

Set Sail on the Spirit of Buffalo

Sorry kids, this one is only for the grown-ups! One of the fun activities for adults in Buffalo, NY, that we discovered is the Nightcap Sail aboard the Spirit of Buffalo. Held daily at 8:30 PM, this 1.5-hour sail will allow you to enjoy the spectacular view of the evening skies on Lake Erie with a nightcap beverage in your hand. Tickets are only $37 USD, making it both an affordable and enjoyable way to end the day.

Enjoy a Fun-Filled Weekend in Buffalo, NY

About Rochester

Set on the Erie Canal and Genesee River, Rochester City has long benefited from being a hub of industry and commerce. The city was founded early in the 19th century, became the USA’s largest flour-producing city in 1838, and earned the nickname “Flour City.” Since then, it’s been a thriving community of academics, cultural events, and social reform movements.

Getting to Rochester From Toronto

It’s a bit of a long drive for a day trip from Toronto, but Rochester makes for a great weekend getaway. The distance is about 168 miles or 270 kilometres, and it’s a pretty decent drive down Highway 401 and a cross over the border using the Queenston-Lewiston Bridge. 

You can take the bus or train from Toronto to Rochester if you’re not driving. The bus is a bit quicker, but the train is cheaper. Both of these modes of transport can be booked on busbud.com.
Tip: For those driving across the border in your own car, make sure you have all the necessary documents, just in case.

There’s truly no shortage of activities in Rochester, NY. If you’re lucky enough to spend more than a day here, you’ll easily find enough to keep you busy. 

Go Bowling at Radio Social

Feel your inner child delight at Radio Social, an entertainment venue inside Rochester’s historical Stromberg-Carlson warehouse with one of the best bowling alleys you’ll ever see. Added to that are the numerous other inside and outside games laid out for you. There’s also a beer and whiskey bar, and often you’ll be able to catch local talent playing live music. 

Stop and Smell The Flowers at Highland Park

With 150 acres and 500 varieties of flowering shrubs, Highland Park is a treasure trove of plant prettiness. Many people travel to Rochester every May just to attend Highland Park’s annual Lilac Festival; it’s that special! And in winter, skating on Lily Pond draws the crowd in. Also within the park is the significant Greater Rochester Vietnam Memorial.

Escaped slave and abolitionist campaigner Frederick Douglass lived and worked in Rochester for around 25 years, so it’s no surprise that the city honours his life. This statue was commissioned by the African-American activist John W. Thompson and sculpted by Sidney W. Edwards. It was installed in Rochester in 1899 and can be found at Robinson Dr & South Ave in Highland Park.

If you use your travels to find unbelievable photo opportunities like us, this is one of those. Located within Highland Park, Warner Castle was built by Horatio Gates Warner (a prominent publisher, judge, and bank president) in 1854. The gardens around the castle include the Sunken Gardens, and you really should take some time to stroll around them. 

Discover The Lamberton Conservatory

And another must-see while at Highland Park (it’s big — there’s a lot) is the Lamberton Conservatory, built in 1911 and named after former President of the Parks Board, Alexander B. Lamberton. The greenhouse is full of fascinating plants to marvel at. 

Shop and Eat at Rochester Public Market

You can’t miss this massive market on Union Street — the sign is pretty large. It’s been around since 1905 and has only become more popular. The market has indoor and outdoor vendors and is open to the public on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. 

It opens as early as 5:00 am (6:00 am on Tues and Thurs) and closes just after lunch. We found a selection of local arts and crafts, fresh produce, and delicious food vendors like Flour City Bread, Fresh Pressed Juice, and Juan & Maria’s Empanadas.

Browse The Rochester Memorial Art Gallery

The Memorial Art Gallery (MAG) is on the University of Rochester’s campus and features a rich art collection spanning various periods and styles. The gallery has a permanent exhibition of 12000 objects that will take you on a journey of over 5,000 years of art history. There are also temporary exhibits, workshops, lectures, and events to participate in. 

Embrace Your Inner Child at The Strong National Museum of Play

If you have kids with you, this will enthral them! If not, prepare to be amazed yourself. This two-story building is packed with interactive exhibit spaces that explore the history of play. Here you’ll find the world’s largest collection of toys, dolls, and games — from video games to board games, carousels, and comics. There’s an indoor butterfly garden, a high rope course, and a food court. 

Rochester Museum & Science Center and Strasenburgh Planetarium

There’s plenty of stuff to do in Rochester with kids, but most of it is great adult fun too. The Museum & Science Center is one such activity. This building provides hours of learning and fun in the form of exhibits based on the world, history, and important topics (like “How Objects And Images Perpetuate Racism… And What We Can Do To Change It” and “Rochester Women Who Changed The World”). 

The planetarium then offers a deep dive into space and the universe, with shows and exhibits that help us better understand the stars and planets. An extension of the RMSC is the Cumming Nature Center, which is all about nature and the outdoors. 

Try a Bit of Wine Tasting at Living Roots Taste Room

Along with playing and learning about this city and the world, there’s still plenty of opportunity to just… chill. The Living Roots tasting room on University Avenue is a good place to start. This is where you can savour some of the wines made at Living Roots Winery (one in Finger Lakes and another in Australia). 

These wines bring together the best harvests from practically all around the world and blend them carefully yet creatively. Book a private wine tasting or try your luck and just pop into the bar to try a glass or two. 

Book an Erie Canal Cruise on the Sam Patch

For this trip, you’ll need to travel about 20 minutes from Rochester to depart from Schoen Place in the Port of Pittsford, NY. Aboard a replica of an 1800s packet boat, take a 90-minute tour of this incredible canal — which many consider the world’s eighth wonder. 

The Erie Canal Cruise on Sam Patch offers food and drinks on board as well as a knowledgeable guide to inform you about landmarks you pass. 

See a Show at The Eastman Theatre

Found at the Eastman School of Music of the University of Rochester, this performance venue is exquisite. It hosts various performers and shows, including comedy, classical concerts, and film screenings. Check the lineup here. 

Take a Step Back in Time at The George Eastman Museum

As the co-founder of the Kodak Company, George Eastman is admired by many photographers — and for good reason! This museum, inside his former mansion home, opened to the public in 1949 and is the oldest photography museum in the world. 

Within its walls, you’ll find a collection of over 400,000 photographs from 14,000 photographers. The museum houses a library, hosts workshops, and draws a crowd almost every Sunday for musical recitals.

Visit The Susan B. Anthony Museum 

Rochester has an amazing list of inspiring past residents, and Susan B. Anthony is one of them. This women’s rights activist lived in her Rochester home for 40 years until her death. This home has become a museum where you can tour and learn more about Anthony and her work.

Find Anthony and Douglas at The Let’s Have Tea Sculpture

You may be interested to know that these amazing people, Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass, knew each other and were friends while living in Rochester. And in Anthony Square Park (across from Anthony’s former residence) is a sculpture dedicated to the famous suffragist and abolitionists and depicts them “having tea”. 

Track Down The Frederick Douglass Mural at 999 South Avenue

On the walls of what used to be the rural second home of the African-American abolitionist, orator, newspaper publisher, and author are adorned with murals that include a number of famous quotes by Douglass. The building is now used as the Anna Murray-Douglass School, Frederick Douglass Library and Frederick Douglass R-Center.

And Their Graves at Mount Hope Cemetery

Another place in Rochester where Anthony and Frederick are immortalized together forever is their gravestones in Mount Hope Cemetery. This cemetery is also the final resting place of other great abolitionists and those who helped make Rochester’s history. As well as both of Douglass’ wives and Anthony’s relatives. 

Take in The Views of Rochester’s High Falls

These stunning falls tower around 96 ft above the Genesee River and have been a focal point of the city since as far back as 1807. Early settlers noted the falls and their potential for hydropower, and so much of the industrial part of Rochester was built around this natural beauty. Thankfully, this means we can visit breweries, bridges, and other businesses today to enjoy a clear and captivating view. 

Stop to Admire The Charlotte–Genesee Lighthouse

As the oldest active surviving lighthouse on Lake Ontario, this structure is one of the top things to see in Rochester, NY. The 1822 stone octagonal lighthouse is 40ft high and sits at the mouth of the Genesee River. You can enter the lighthouse and even book an informational tour, but I’d suggest you first look at their opening hours and seasonal changes. 

Steal a Glance at White Lady’s Castle

If you walk through Durand-Eastman Park, you’ll eventually come across a crumbling stone structure that looks a bit medieval (and a little spooky, if I’m honest). This actually used to be a hotel dining hall way back when. 

But over the decades, it has crumbled and now sits in ruins which Rochester locals have dubbed the White Lady’s Castle. Maybe don’t go at night, but if you’re into old ruins, this is one of the best places to visit in Rochester, NY. 

Make a Turn at Rundel Memorial Building

A striking building sitting on the Genesee River banks, this memorial building was once the original downtown site of the Rochester Public Library. It was built during the Great Depression, and many hurdles existed before the dream was realized. This has served as an inspiration to the Rochester people that anything is possible. 

Find The 1872 Monument

Not far from the Susan B. Anthony Museum is a bronze ballot box standing as a reminder of where Anthony (a woman) voted illegally in 1972. This year, Anthony led a group of women from her home to West Main Street, where only men could vote. That day, Anthony was arrested and fined for her “crime,” but this was just the start of the movement allowing women to vote.

While exploring the streets, you’ll get hungry or need a refreshing drink. There are plenty of great restaurants in Rochester and a selection of breweries and other establishments. 

The Cub Room

This family-run industrial-style tavern serves seasonal dishes and dramatic cocktails. Stop by for a brunch of Manhattan Donuts or a Diner Breakfast. Or have dinner and choose from meals like the Cubby Burger or Grilled Octopus. 

Genesee Brew House

25 Cataract St

If you’re even the slightest bit interested in beer, the process of making it, and the drink’s history, the Genesee Brewery is the place to visit. In 2012, the 100-year-old building was transformed from an old brew house into a brewery that pays homage to its history but breathes new life into its beers. 
For the record, the Orange Honey Cream Ale has entered into our top five favourite beers.

Stop by to take a few beers home, have lunch and a beer flight in the taproom, or book a tasting and tour of the brewery. Also, be sure to reserve a seat on the upper patio, as it offers the best views of the city and High Falls.

Open Wednesday through Saturday, from 4:30 pm until late, this bold and bright restaurant has made its home in a warehouse-style space. Book a table for dinner, enjoy one of their hearty meals and a scrumptious dessert, and pair it with your choice of a cocktail, beer, or wine. 

You should note that the majority of the food on the menu has a rather large serving size and is designed to be shared. The Bibb Salad and the Good Luck Burger (A burger the size of your head and very popular here) were more than enough for 2 us.

This Bohemian cafe serves breakfast and lunch, with coffee or cocktails on the side. And despite the name, it’s a great place for visitors too. The menu is delectable and varied for all tastes, and the atmosphere is welcoming and relaxed. I’d suggest making this your first stop of the day. 

Strangebird Brewery

62 Marshall St

Named the 2022 New York State Craft Brewery of the Year, Strangebird brewery is yet another spot to sip on handcrafted beers. They also have an impressive menu of pizza, burgers, mac and cheese, as well as other beer-friendly meals. They’re open Thursday to Monday from 12:00  pm to 11:00 pm (last food orders are at 9:00 pm).

Dinosaur Bar-B-Que

99 Court St

This quirky southern-style restaurant opened in 1998 and took over the former Lehigh Valley Railroad Station. It’s now a favourite for anyone craving that distinct BBQ flavour in their food. But while the meat options are amazing, the menu also caters to vegetarians, vegans, and other dietary restrictions. Ah, and if you’re road tripping with your dog, you can have lunch with them here too. 

TRATA Rochester

145 Culver Rd

Have dinner here any day (except Wednesdays — they’re closed) and enjoy a large selection of meals, beer, and wine. All set in a large, contemporary but upscale building. The self-serve wall with 48 beers on tap is a focal point.

Rohrbach Brewing Co. & Roc Brewing Co.

As soon as you pass under the “Welcome to Rochester City” sign, you’re in for a weekend to be remembered and planning to come back.
